I think this is disgraceful. Whatever your feelings about the Iraq war at the end of the day the soliders have a job to do. If they get seriously injured doing that job forcing them to pay back money they have been paid is just not on.

Don't have much sympathy for people who are paid extra by mistake and then refuse to give it back... which seems to be the case with some of them according to that article.

The guy who was injured and then had to pay a fee for not finishing his tour of duty isn't on though.

Jesus christ, that's bang out of order!

Remind me not to join the USMC, that's a f*cking nice way to treat your vets.

    Vietnam, anyone?

That is a complete disgrace, but to be honest not surprising from the US Army. The idea that they take care of their own is nonsense, the Army and the government have been shafting ex-service men for years, something that ironically got worse under the Bush administration, the administration that forced an unnecessary war on the country.

Fair enough, then deduct it from their pay / pension over a period of time, not force people to live on the street.

Dont the US army pay compensation to injured soldiers ?

I think its an injury pension only (if discharged).

The compensation is from a soldier's mutual fund, i.e. it comes out of their own pay.

The vast majority of these cases are paperwork SNAFUs. The Army isn't as heartless as all that, but things snowball out of control if someone hasn't filled out the correct form. The problem is that the person whose job it is to sort out such problems doesn't have his own pay on the line, and is not as motivated as he should be to get things sorted out quickly

Not directly, unless there is a resulting permanent physical disability. However, there are various federal and state benefits to Purple Heart recipients separate from a simple cash payment.
