had a socket 478 motherboard that failed.
decided to replace it with a socket 775 with new graphics card, cpu & fan, ddr2 - and thats all.
the original untouched hardrive is still there.

so put it all together - and after an initial boot screen -it attempts to load windows xp and I get a blue screen.

I put in my xp cd and set the boot seq to cd-rom.
but it will not do anything different.

I know now that I will need to re-install xp but how ??

    ny ideas,

    thx

    karl.

You definately need to re-install XP! Put the CD in before booting, and press something when it says "Press any key to boot from CD-ROM" - it should do this just after POST.

Zilog is correct , you cant just change out your motherboard and expect your old installation to work , far too many device driver conflicts.
You need to reinstall or repair , try repair first , it might work !
To get XP to boot , change the sequence so that only the CD or DVD drive is allowed to boot , turn all other boot devices off !!

Odd. Don't know about XP, but with 98, it should work. As for mobo drivers, etc, shouldn't matter. It should still boot. The drivers just act extra functionality.

If it says any english in the first few lines of the blue screen, tell us. It usually comes up with a driver conflict, etc, and states the problem.

will try turning all devices except the cd-rom off first and see how that works.

it looks like its trying to load xp and fails - so will turn off HD and see if it will read the xp cd .

    thx

If it were me, I'd go for a full reformat and reinstall of windows, it's best to start with a fresh, clean install of windows after changing motherboard.

XP should still boot unless running on a SATA drive. It just has a spasm when you boot it for the first time as it tries to install drivers for your new hardware.
Although anyone doing it this way would only do so to backup the info as your filling your system reg with a load of useless junk, making it slower and inefficiant. It's just bad practice.

99.99999999999999999% of the time you get bluecreen is due to dodgy ram. This may have been caused by your previous hardware.

    Reinstall XP.

    Good luck.

think I will go for a full format and re-install of windows so.

I have formated a full hd bfore but not a 30gb partition like I have at the moment.

How do I go about this.
Will I need a boot disc or is there an option at the start of the install to format C (which is the partition drive)

No doubt i will have to reload games etc

    thx

Not 100% sure, but I think that there's a "repair" option, that reinstalls windows, but keeps all the files, so you don't need to reinstall stuff. Win2000 had it, not sure if XP has it.

I always boot from an old DOS floppy and use FDISK to create/delete/format harddrive partitions.
I haven't tried using windows software like 'partition magic' etc, but I find fdisk simple and easy to follow.

he still should have been able to use the INSTALL/REPAIR option available in XP, would save the whole new install.

might be a bit late but have a look here....

    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html

I had a similar problem trying to move someone else's hdd with xp installed onto an old sysytem I didn't want any more - never actually sorted it because I hadn't the time & didn't want to risk damaging data on their hdd, but if you've resigned to reformatting it might be worth trying this first, you've nothing to lose.

Also, and I could be wrong here, but I vaguely remember reading something about oem versions of xp that once installed they create a profile of the system they're on and any substantial change will result in installed xp not booting, but from what I can see the above site seems to offer a workaround for this problem.

    You'd think that...
Yeah I know Windows 95 and 98 had no problems changing between hardware (I've swapped a win95 install between 2 totally different PCs!), but Win2k/XP just seems to have a complete spa attack when you do the same with it.

There's a program on the WinXP CD (when you go to the "recovery console") called DISKPART which you can create/delete partitions with - it's a bit more modern than DOS FDISK so it is more suited to large disks, NTFS and whatever. You could try the repair install first like others have said - can't say I've done it myself but it might work OK. You'll probably have to re-install some programs though.
