ARCHBISHOP of Dublin Diarmuid Martin has distanced himself from a lecture in his diocese by an American rebel priest banned by the Pope from teaching in Catholic universities.
Controversial Washington-based moral theologian Fr Charles Curran is due to speak at a public lecture in St Patrick's College in Maynooth on Friday.
Dr Martin yesterday took the unusual step of issuing a statement on his diocesan website, which claims he is "no way involved" in the talk.
While accepting Fr Curran was a priest in good standing, the archbishop said the American theologian was declared "not suitable to exercise the functions of professor of Catholic theology".
This ban on Prof Curran was imposed by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI.
The two-day conference this weekend is titled 'The Risks of Theology', and is being held in honour of Ireland's pre-eminent moral theologian, Fr Enda McDonagh.
Fr Curran's scheduled evening lecture is on the subject of 'Moral Theology since Vatican II'.

Now, *that* sounds like an interesting idea! A pity that I'll be out of the country for it!

Not a source that I would quote often but the Irish catholic has a piece in it, this week, about how the st. pats home-boyz ain't too happy about Curran getting an invite to their party. They're probably going to try put a few caps in his ass - would make for good viewing.

No sure that it is a "public" lecture - (dirty washing in public and all).

Too right. It is their pontifical college and if the hierarchy are at theological odds, why should they support his views by giving him a soap box on their own home turf?
