Ran stinger, avg, no adaware and spybot and found girlfriends hard drive was riddled with viruses, troan horses and spyware. Cleared all of them and it has solved all the problems they were having with their machine.

However since I cleared them all, they cannot browse the net. Its a 56k connection. They can dial up no problem but when they attempt to view a page it returns "Cannot find server".

Anyone any ideas as to what it might be? I know its probably hard to diagnose seen as you dont know what viruses/trojan horse were found but any thoughts appreciated. I have restored the default web settings. Considering reinstalling IE next time im over.

Have you cleared the Cache? Tools > Internet Options > General

Click Delete Cookies, also click delete files and click delete all offline content in the sub window. Finally click delete History, I used to get that window before I switched to Firefox and sometimes that would clear it. What OS are you running, is it Microsoft Windows XP?

I've read about certain virulent strains of spyware/malware modifying the Internet connection to add filters to the connection to do the apps. dirty work and that removing them can cut you off from the Internet.

I forgot the details however :( I'll have a look but no guarantees.

Yeah, the infamous rootkit virus Sony infected their customers with did this to CD drives.

Just had a look around: this may not help but ... (assuming you're using Windows XP might be different if not)

Go to the Control Panel, then System, then find the Device Manager.

Inside that, go and look for whatever you're using to connect this to the Internet. Right click on it and choose "Properties" inside that go for the "details" tab.

There will be a drop-down list of some advanced components of the installed driver, below that, a textbox for any information about whatever is selected from the list. Which normally we wouldn't bother with.

Look in that list for Device Upper Filters, Device Lower Filters, Class Upper Filters and Class Lower Filters. Select each in turn, the textbox should be blank for each. If it's not, you've found your problem.

    I've seen this before also.

There is a program on your PC called winsock and what it does in a nutshell is pass info from the internet to a specific souce, say your browser. Some spyware can alter it's settings and get it it point to it so the program can record what information you are viewing. It in turn sends the requested information to you but sends a copy of what you were looking at to some one else.

This may* be the solution but go to Run
Bring up the dos box & type "netsh winsock reset".

    -P

yeah, that's what I read, some kind of tampering with winsock. Removing the tamperer without fixing winsock causes the Internet to stop working basically.

Edit: Google the phrases spyware and winsock you will get some interesting results, several spyware programs modify/replace Winsock32.dll including BonziBuddy, Web3000 and so on.

You may have to reinstall Windows.

Try this - worked for me:
    WinSock XP Fix
    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

    info:
WinSock XP Fix offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings. If you encounter connection problems after removing network related software, Adware or after registry clean-up; and all other ways fail, then give WinSock XP Fix a try. It can create a registry backup of your current settings, so it is fairly safe to use. We actually tested it on a test machine that was having a Winsock problem due to some Adware removal, and after running the utility and rebooting, the connectivity was restored.

Just an update on the above.

Tried all of the above but to no avail. To save all the questions I reinstalled Windows and problem solved. Not sure what the problem was in the end, I should have made a note of the viruses I removed.

But anyways its all working fine now, thanks for the help.

    Hi jumpa...

I think what you did in the end was the right option.

if you have a way of backing all of my docs, have all the discs for motherboard, hardware, programs & Windows etc etc...i would personally wipe the drive (use DBAN formatting utility) and start from scratch.

No matter how many virus and spyware scans you do, you will never remove malacious items on your PC.
