Is there a way of connecting (via adaptor or cables etc) speakers that have connections for spring clips to a dvd player with the normal audio outputs sockets?

See pictures...not sure of the proper names!

They dont look to be Speaker outputs on the DVD player. The look like line outs to me. (ie to plug into an amplifier)

Yeah , the outputs on the DVD player are line level outs typically at 1V peak to peak , basically you need an amp to amplify that to a level to drive the speakers ,

You cannot connect a DVD player directly to speakers. ( unless it has an amp built in ...and most dont ! )
