I have cobbled together a photo gallery to exhibit my collection of photographs of doors, windows, gates and other opes. I hope you will visit and let me have your comments.

    The URL is http://www.deejayem.com/hosted/gallery/doors/

It is a work in progress so bear that in mind and that I know nothing about web design.

I got bored after the first page.
The one with the wired dome is good. The rest...

i visited it, virtually none of the shots impressed me in any kind of aesthetic way and there was virtually no originality.

photography is all about using light and creating composition that stimulates the eye. these shots just don't tick either of those boxes for me

also, web design is very easy to learn and to put a simple page together with some photos doesn't take much effort

Thanks for visiting my site and giving me your views.

I have had a look at your website today but I can't say that looking at photos of musicians playing at gigs appeals to me. I have no doubt that you are very talented but the subject matter leaves me cold. I think your portrait work is better but I don't believe that it shows any great originality. Maybe it is difficult to come up new ways of looking at the same subjects. I take your point about the ease of web design and I suppose it only took me a couple of hours yesterday to cobble together what I did but I would not try to sell my services as a designer yet.

Thank you for your views on my opes site. I had a look at your site today. I liked a couple of landscapes and your swan pictures but I think the photos of musicians are boring and not worth viewing.

Are you now going to take the piss at everyone who's commenting on your pics? Soon you'll receive no comments anymore at all....

i never asked for a critique on my website, you asked for a critique on your pictures, which i gave.

you should spend your time getting things like your shots in focus rather than going around looking at websites of photography of subjects you don't find interesting

    Love this thread.
Just burst out in uncontrollable laughing for at least 3 minutes there and im not the type to do that.
    The bitchiness is excellent.
    Love the replies.
Didn’t even look at any of the sites, im sure all your work is great.
    Keep the bitterness flowing.

I was going to comment on your photos and point you to similar pools of photos on Flickr for comparison but I don't see the point now.

I see that some people here are not too happy about receiving criticism. They prefer to dish it out as if their own position was unassailable. If DotOrg does not want his website visited and commented on why does he include the URL in all his posts.

I am sorry that you have decided not to visit my ope site though as I appreciate all comments - good and bad - once they are helpful and they are geared towards improving my "snapping".

Thanks Dimy for your comment even if it wasn't about my work. I decided to treat people in the same way as they treat me by looking at their work and commenting on that work while treating them with respect. I notice that you still don't get the point. If the advice offered is helpful I will take it as I have from you in the past. I do not see the world in terms of black and white.

The vital difference here being that you asked for critique and comments, nobody else did. If you don't want/can't take peoples personal opinions on your photos simply don't post any here.

Either take the criticism and learn from it or don't open threads looking for it in the first place.

    Folks,
I've started my new website. The beta version is up, with the photo library.
Pop along and have a look please. All C&C welcome and encouraged.
    Some you'll have seen before.

By the way, there's more than one page there too, some people have missed that. There's 4 pages of images.

    Cheers.

I see that you have not read what I wrote. I am quite happy to take criticism and I am now prepared to offer criticism in the same way as others do but without being as offensive in my language as they are.

What's the term for 'unsolicited criticism' again? This is all really childish from what i've read :(

    would you include yourself there?

I did not ask for comments or criticism on my website, I provide a link to it so people can see my background in photography; so they can see that i know something about composition, lighting, digital editing and the business side of photography. Of course I am not above criticism on my work.

i gave a citique, here's some more comments on your photographs which if you took in you may find people started liking a lot more of your photographs:

many of your images have huge contrast. in images where the subject is the detail, this means you lose the focal point that people would be looking for.

most of your images have a depth of field which does nothing to benefit the aestetics. many of the shots are under or over exposed. some of them are suffering from either camera shake or being out of focus.

many of the images have nothing which draw the eye into the image and around the various elements of the images. all of the images appear to be taken from the same standing position, no variety in changing the angle at which the shots were taken.

the black and white images lack any interesting tones, they look like basic colour desaturations.

there is very little theme or narrative in the images, they don't tell the viewer a story or make the viewer intrigued.

one of my favourite photographers who's shot lots of doors and archways etc is:

    Not Your Ornery Onager

I looked at the first two pages of your site. However, I am afraid to offer any criticism, as I don't have a site which you could slag in return.:p

But I did visit your site.

I read your first post and followed the links to your photo site, then I returned to comment (not bash you as you seem to think) and I read how you had treated other posters and decided not to waste my time.

You asked for pointers but you didn't get a "wow, your pictures are amazing" reaction you decided to critique others photo sites, uninvited. You didn't ask why they said what they said or even say "yeah I get what your saying but what about...." you just launched into critising people who given their opinions on your photos which is what you asked for in the beginning.

Look, you knob, I asked for criticism on a different thread. If you want to comment on my photographs, then go to that thread and do it there.
As you appear to know little about photography, I'm happy to accept your ignorant views.

Again, don't post your photographs if you can accept the truth they are average at best. I'm not looking down my nose, I'm giving you advice to which you should adhere to if you wish to get along on this forum.

Now play nicely with the other childern.

DotOrg and I gave perfectly polite opinions of joolsveer's site, it was he who then turned pathetically commented on DotOrg and my site, unsolicited, starting the decline of this thread.

Once again, another thread of jool's being locked because it's gone so far off left field that it's more handbags at dawn than relevant discussion.

Jools, if you seriously want constructive criticism on any of your photos, don't be a git about it when people give you exactly that. Turning things around and giving criticism when it's not asked for in the context of the thread is a good way to piss people off. I'd say quit while you're behind.

If anyone wants to offer a reasonable and coherant reason why this thread should be re-opened, I'll consider it. Jools, if you open another similar thread immediately be prepared for a good slapping.

Rymus got in just ahead of me, but I second what he says.
If this type of crap continues, we will end up not allowing critique requests at all.
