My First Set...

Ok, this it my first time posting, and looking at some of the critiscism on other threads, I'm ready for the worst... just try to be kind :P

I'm basically a complete beginner looking for any advice. These were all taken on a tiny Canon point and shoot (IXUS 50)... so I did what I could. You'll notice general amateur characteristics, excessive use of the 'my colours' setting, and a fair bit of noise on one or two of them due to the ISO being 400.

These were all taken in my friend's house in Wicklow. I realise that they're nothing compared to what is sometimes seen on this forum, some of them are just random macro shots, but I'd just like a little analysis/ constructive critiscism, aside from laying off the colour settings...

This is my friend somersaulting over my head. I realise the composition isn't great, but it wasn't the easiest thing to catch.. for me anyway... I just managed to get him as he looked down.

this photo is just to give an idea of where the next few were taken...

and finally, this is just a basic shot of the place itself:

I realise it can be a bit annoying being bombarded with so many at once... but I'd appreciate any feedback, apart from just plain old "that's crap". Just speak to me in a really condescending manner, and I'll take the hint. :p

Keep in mind that the camera was about the size of a credit card :P.

very good shots, the somersualting one can just be cropped and its grand. really like the lanscape shots, the b/w forest with the mist is especially good.dunno bout the selective colouring...thats very hard to pull off imo. great work tho, you'll be itching for an slr i bet soon enough, you've a good eye

Thanks for sharing :) Some of those are pretty good. The first one of your friend somersaulting I like. Dont worry about how big your camera is. You used what tools you had and came up with some good shots imo. Keep it going.

Love the pic of your friend somersaulting! Great shot!

Last shot is nice too. Shot of the fret is very cliché, but good considering you were using a compact, you got a grand short depth of field on it! An SLR would suit you down to the ground ;)

As posted above, I'm not sure about the semi-desaturating shots, Imo, that's best saved for reds, yellows and blues, preferably quite unnatural ones!

Hope to see more soon :)

(See - we're not that critical)

I like your photos ,fair play to you for messing with the colours.
I think the window shot is very subtle.

Some nice shots in there. Keep it up, the window shot was my favourite.

BTW you're going to ruin your trampoline if you keep jumping on it in those big boots.

Yeah i think you've posted some pretty good shots there man, and some show great potential.

The somersaulting one is great, and as the lads said, you can just crop the photo to make your friend more central in the pic.

If i can make a suggestion to one of your pics, well two of them, the two of the person jumping off the trampoline, try cropping out the trampoline, in my opinion it will make the shot alot more interesting as we cant see what the person is jumping off, heres just an example,

I hope you dont mind me editing your shots!

I like your first one best as it reminds me of the cover of Tapestry by Carole King.

Wow, thanks guys, for all the feedback. It's very encouraging and means a lot.
I have to admit, I was kinda waiting for them to be torn apart :P...
But I really appreciate all the suggestions...

I might have gone a bit astray with the selective colouring alright... I'll have to develop more of a knack for it... Point noted.

lol, the fret board is a bit of a cliché I guess, I just couldn't help myself... :P

I don't mind at all Flip, by all means edit them a bit... it helps me get an idea of what you mean... I certainly like the first one, and the second one is very good as well, but my idea behind that one was catching both my firends in a sort of symmetry type thingy... not sure how well it worked out :P but it's cool even as a seperate pic and it certainly has given me some more composition ideas... Thanks

it's sorta like what I was trying to do with this one:

    wecklow084medium0ri.jpg

Sorry, that's the last one I'll post here :P... I kinda forgot to include it..

Thanks very much anyway... I'll definitely keep it up... and eventually try to get me an SLR... :)

    Excellent stuff good work

Yeah I kinda figured that about the second one alright but I said id do it just as an example.

Yeah it deffo adds to the pic IMO.

Keep it up man, really good stuff!

Sauron - that one with your mate somersaulting and looking right at you is excellent, very well caught. It's the kind of image used by advertisers, looks very "Vodafone" if you know what I mean.

That one with the same guy upside down over the trampoline looks like the prelude to a serious injury!

    Keep it up.

[BTW - I'm not a fan either of the black and white mixed with colour lark. I've spent the last few months looking at wedding photographers and they are all at it - I don't think it does anything for a picture apart from make me look at it and go "There's something weird about that one, what is it? Oh yeah." ]

Thanks a lot Benster... much appreciated :)

However dangerous that pic looks, no one was harmed :P the upside down guy managed to land it perfectly... He's become quite good at them... :P

and looking back, I have to agree with what's been said about the selective colouring... it wasn't the most appropriate subject in retrospect... I just wanted to try it out... :P

    Thanks again...

I like the one of the guy jumping

The first shot of the window is very nice, I normally find the lighting in shots like that very hard with a point and shoot.

    Great work.
