    Hi,

I'm looking for(thinking of starting to train again) a BJJ or a submission grappling school in Dublin,

So far I found only this...
    http://sbgireland.com/

but I could not find their pricing and their training times table is a bit confusing... I'm not exactly a newbie, I've been grappling before, what's included in 101 class? what fundamentals? like phylosopsy and stuff?(will you get tired in 101 class or is it like for kids and old people?) and does the price include training 6 times a week or 3 or how many? anyone know?

Are there any other gyms in Dublin? which is the best?

Oh and another question... where can I buy a kimono?(GI, what does GI stand for anyway?) Do you guys that grapple buy them online or offline? I'm looking for one of those reversible Mizuno(Blue and White) kimonos.

Elytron has covered just about everything there. On the Southside I'd recommend SBG, yes their site isn't very good but John Kavanagh's club is about the best there is.

On the northside out in Donaghmed is SBG Northside run by Andy Ryan, if your a northsider here's the place to go.

On a side not, I wouldn't turn up at either at say "I'm not a newbie, I've done some grappling before", or you might find your ass handed to you on a plate, lol.. nah, seriously, let people suss you out themselves ;)

Go to the 101 class. Don't let ego be a mat killer. If you've covered some of the techniques before, John Kavanagh will help you refine them. Basics are the most important factor of grappling, poor basics will you you a poor grappler. Gi just means uniform/clothes in japanese. Judogi is a uniform for judo, etc..

    Hi Elytron,

Just a small correction - we're actually called Three Castles MMA (in Tallaght). :)

If you're looking specifically for BJJ then your best best is definitely one of the SBG affiliates.

If you are looking for MMA (standup, clinch, grapple) then you are more than welcome to pay us a visit: www.mmaireland.com

    -Shane.

    Hey,
Just to correct Elytron's post slightly. (ever so slightly) We don't do "a little bit of grappling", BJJ accounts for about 40% of our time. But thanks for the mention anyway.

    www.ko-martialarts.com for any more info.

NextGeneration also do a submission wrestling class on saturday at 12oclock in St. Andrews college Booterstown.

The rest of the classes are in Loughlinstown leisure centre just off the N11.

It seems you're just spoiled for choice! :p

Ah, cool thread. I was just about to start one like it.

Maeve, what are the class sizes like in Fairview? Anyone else trained there before? Experiences, opinions etc.

I was looing at places like SBG, but Defendu is a lot nearer to where i'm based.

Cool, thats a nice small class

I'll definately head down on Sat and check it out.

    Thanks Maeve :)

Great see ya then... there's at least one guy here on the board who trains with Ray, there's also been four of five guys out from SBG at different times, I think only one of them posts here.

The classes are pretty similar, so anyone who trained in Fairview, Swords or DCU can give you a run down... I let them cause I'm biased :D

I trained with Ray in Swords one night. Good, easy-going environment. Not enough rolling(sparring) for my liking that night but the class was very much in it's infancy at that stage, I'm sure it's a lot different now. Ray's a nice bloke and the whole group were very welcoming and cool. Get down there and give it a shot. BJJ is addictive!

    Thanks for your inputs everyone,

I guess I'll go check out SBG since I'd prefer to train BJJ(grappling basically) as much as possible, I'm based in Clondalkin, but don't really care about the distance I have to travel.

dlofnep, thanks for the GI explanation, I always thought it was some new American term/abbreviation for Kimono for some reason, never liked to use that word, since I always prefer to call things the way they are called in their country ;)

And lol no no, I don't go to gyms with macho "I'll beat you all" attitude, I asked about the 101 class, cause I simply want to know if I get tired there, don't really care about beating/be beaten by anyone really, just want to have hard workouts.

    Thanks again everyone!

Elytron, I'll PM(I have too free up my pm box first) you about those GIs are they Mizuno brand?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭MaeveD

    CyberGhost,
I have a contact for the blue and white gis too... they're not the brand you're looking for though.... but pm me if you want the contact details :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭MaeveD
