    Me thinks it wasn't :D

Its probably one of the old Philips DVD Recorders which are notoriously bad. I'd bring it back if I was you.

Hard disc recorders the only way to go (IMHO)

I had one which I had to return. Unlike Ronseal, it didn't do what it said on the tin! It'll wreck your head. Return it!

I have one, its not the best, but dos what I want it for. The menu system isnt great. And there are too many options when it comes to editing. But you get what you pay for a suppose.

The problem is I cant copy old videos onto disks as backup. The actual cassetes are in poor quality. The videos are protected by macrovision. anyone know if it is possible to copy them?

What model is it? I also have a philips one DVDR-75 and I find it excellent. Never had any bother with it.

I have the same model, it is getting a little problematic now after 2 1/2 years of very heavy use although it could just need cleaning.

Philips DVD-R do have a bad rep, not sure how accurate it is but when I get another it will be a HDD+DVD model.

Yes it is possible but discussing such things here is not allowed.
