Makes me wonder if I've got a PC or a console...

You've got a free form linux based pc in a white console box. Same as the xbox. They wont be updating older consoles. The chips are available with a better architecture so they'll utilise this in the newer batches.

Happens with every console. Cheaper more efficient parts become available throughout the lifetime of the console and new version of hardware are released.

They will still perform exactly like the current 360's.

Well if they make use of the new arch they'll prob be able to get a little bit of extra performance over the current batches. Wont be much of a diff though

The original xbox under went 7 hardware revisions (1.0-1.6b), varying from redesigned motherboards, different company manufactured dvd drives-(already happened to 360) , different hard drives (some even larger models) and various chipset alterations (specially regarding video) and all xboxs operate the same, as Ciaran already mentioned, hardware will always change, as new methods, and more importantly cheaper methods are created.

PS2 went through the same sort of alterations too. I don't know about the Gamecube but I'd be surprised if it didn't.

This is badly needed though, my second 360 has given up the ghost and I know other people on their third box too. Anything to reduce heat will be most welcome, at this rate I'll be getting a replacement xbox every couple of months till I eventually get one with the new CPU.

Yeah this is nothing unusual. The PS2 when through 8 different versions and that was before the release of the slim model!
