Just bought a new weekend car, does does classify for any classic car respect yet or do I have to wait another few years? I know there are still loads of them about but I think that is a good thing, naturally I have a soft spot for my one in particular. Is 1987 still considered quite a new car?

    It's a 1987 190E

My cut off would be about 84, but thats just me. Suppose its on its way to becoming a classic, because its not a car that would be bought by a 'normal' :D

another few years to go so! on the other hand it was first available in '82 -whats in a number plate? I'm looking forward to spending the summer months restoring it to its former glory, not much to do but I think it will be a real stunner when i'm through with it

I wouldnt call it a classic just yet, but mercs seem to become considered classic quite early. Give it a couple more years and it will be "less ordinary" if i can put it like that. They great thing about classics is you dont see ones like them every day and theyre design is unlike those of today. A car from the 80s is still quite new BUT theres no reason why you cant enjoy it anyway. It may still be a great car. Good luck with it!

Thanks for the positive (I think!) feedback guys. I was born in 1982 and so was the production of this car so it definiteley has sentimental value for me. My last car before it was stolen was an immaculate nissan bluebird turbo which I know was not considered in the classsic class yet. If anyone is interested in the progress of how I get on in restoring this car please let me know.
I do agree about the taxicab asscociations -but some of my favourite cars are the bluebird, the W201, and the camry, go figure!
If anyone does spot my unique Merc around give me a friendly beep and I'll appreciate it and I'll join the forum in another few years when people truely appreciate these cars as a classic!

    Best regards

Yikes get shot of those wheels! Rounded edge 3 spokers are for little Pugs and Citroens only! :)

See if you can find some 8 hole alloys.

The other thing you must do is join this message board.

    Mike.

In reality, now is the time to buy an early 190 or W124 series before they start to disappear and prices go crazy, look at the money W123s are starting to make, Polish guy works with me and he can't understand W123s going for anything from 2 to 10 grand, his last car in Poland was a 79 240D that cost him 500 euros

I used to own a 190E and indeed it was an ex-taxi.

Great car but the W124 is a truer merc.
