Mods feel free to move this as it did not seem to fit into music equipment or bargain alerts.

Im looking at a 30GB Ipod Video on Ebay and its priced nicely at 244 euro but its coming from the states?
Just wondering what Adaptor is suppied with these as the American plugs are different?
Is the charger provided via a USb or what and what are generally feeling on buying from the states, will it make a difference?
Feel free to advise if you see it cheaper than 244 by the way,
    Thanks

New iPods dont come with an adaptor. Charged by USB

If charged by a USB then it should be safe enough to get it from the states?

You should be grand. But there's two things to note, one is you may not have the Apple warrentee thingy which is damn handy if something happens and your ipod breaks (they'll replace your ipod in about 4-5 days min, which is pretty cool), and secondly, you'll probably be stung for VAT when it comes through customs.

Cheers for the help guys, forgot all about the customs

So far Ive got two ipods from the states. Friends have brought them back so dont know about getting caught for vat through the mail.

Both charge perfectly through the usb and both work fine with uk adaptors bought from ebay

i bought an ipod a few years ago in florida and was told the apple warranty was worldwide. so came home and registered it on the apple website for warranty with no problems. haven't had to use the warranty but it seems easy enough if you have to. apple's website has all the info needed

I recently bought an iAudio from the States and with it marked as gift and down as a voice recorder at a value of something like $29 it got through customs no problem. If you can you should ask your dealer to do likewise.

I heard that story before about marking them as a gift but wasnt sure if it was true, might try that if i can contact the seller.
anybody else know how much i could expect to pay if stung by the customs or if its smarter to get it delivered to a work address?

I think its somewhere around 21%-25%.Personaly i have never been caught out for customs at all and i order from the states and asia a good bit.I find using USPS you never get stung, ive heard with the likes of DHL you will be stung for sure.To be honest i would not be too willing to get someone to write down the value at 30 euro and as gift,if it gets lost you are screwed!.Good luck with it whatever your decision.

I bought one about 2 years ago on Ebay, I ended up paying 48 euros extra
on Duty. 9.50 of that was customs clearence fee. But it still worked out cheaper than buying it in Ireland, and it still works. Just make sure you buy
it from a 'power seller' with good stats. :D

duty is 14% add that to the price you paid then add 21% Vat.

don't buy electrical goods from outside europe unless you can carry them across yourself

Is duty not 10%? I just bought an iPod on amazon.co.uk for €300 including shipping. I seriously doubt it's worth the hassle to buy one for €240 from the States. If you get nailed for duty and VAT, it will be applied to the total cost including shipping, not just the purchase price.

No volume limiter to get rid of on US models either.

just to add confirmation on the warranty, got a 3rd gen from the States many moons ago,
mate of mine works over there and picked it up for me.
HD died about 6 months after and Apple got it sorted with out issues.

The volume limiter also is afaik applied through the firmware and can be turned off.
