    Ouch!!!

Although, wouldn't you be a little weary of handing anyone over a grand in cash?

Holy crap! I'm impressed by the simplicity of it! Great scam....If you're a big enough scumbag to carry it out.

My boss was talking about that today. You man is a total scumbag, i knew when i was a student in Dublin how hard it was to get accomodation.

    Scumbag.

That's a proper con - there are few people who wouldn't be fooled by that. Good to make a mental note - if you're renting an apartment, meet the landlord at the property and ensure it is as it was when you viewed it (he could have removed appliances, etc).

Have to give him some credit for pulling it off though.

    Wonder if he'll be caught?

Give him credit ?..... Giving him a couple of years inside would be much better. A similar scam was pulled in Dublin about 2yrs ago, although the sum involved was considerably less. 1 or 2 grand as far as I remember. The way the market is for decent rental properties its easy to see how these people were caught out.

I'm not saying I condone what he did, I'm just saying he should get some respect for actually doing it.

I'd still like to see him in jail though.

    That man is a genius!

A girl in work had something similar happen to here. She owns a 2 bed apartment.
A Polish guy moved into her spare room He then took deposits and one months rent of another two girls who wanted to rent the apartment. He then stole the apartment owners car because she left her spare keys in the apartment.

The owner got some shock when she came home two weeks ago to find two strangers in her house and her car gone.

So be careful. The guy in the original post isn't the only con artist around.

I know a girl who had a similar thing happen, let a room out in her rented house to a girl who seemed nice, within a week they were sharing secrets, came home from work one day and the girl was gone, a long with her passport, bank details, money . Her bank account was emptied also, with her passport as ID, I think the bank paid back that money though.

Correct. It was on BBC3 and it's called "Real Hustle". If anyone is interested, the bit in question was aired on episode 5. I was surprised to see how these scams work.

Landlords in general are scum, most of the landlords/landladies I have dealt with always tried to get the extra few bob by not returning the deposit.
Never trust a landlord that doesn't accept direct debit.

The man is a genius? Are you people smoking crack or what? What's so 'genius' about this crime? It's slightly more cerebral than murdering someone. If you think this is a 'genius' crime then you're an idiot. As for showing the guy respect - if you do then I hope you end up in jail with him, where you both belong. You morons.

Glorifying crime is not big, hard or clever.

Simplistic white collar crime at its best! Of course I dont condone but I have to say its so easy its not funny.Dont understand why people handed over the money straight away tho?? Thats not par for the course I wouldnt have said?

Also, how hard can it be to track him down? I mean the real owner of the property has to be registered so its simple who ask them why this dude had the keys, they have to be culpable in some way...
