Just wondered what ye all think of all the psychics on tv at the moment. John Edward, Colin Fry, Derek Akorah, Gordon Smith, etc etc. Are any of these genuine, or are they all jumping on the publicity bandwagon? And is psychic tv a good or a bad thing?

I used to love watching John Edward years ago when he first hit our screens. Being in a situation where I could relate to the circumstances it appealed to that part of me and I delved into the world of spiritualism.
I feel a little differently about it now the novelity has worn off.
I had the oppertunity via the web to integrate and meet a few celeb psychics and following that old saying about never meeting our hero's, I was truley dissapointed.
I saw Colin Fry and tony stockwell last year at the helix and just wanted to go home at half time.
    Derek Acorah is just slimey.
There's a lot of money to be made in being a celeb psychic and maybe I'm just bitter I don't have the balls to take it for what it's worth too. :o

I suppose Im of a similar opinion so. I used to like John Edward too, but those shows seem to be heavily edited, and I just wonder how much faffing about has been removed. I always had a lot of respect for Gordon Smith, but now that hes joined Most Haunted I wonder if hes selling out.

In this business if you want to make a living out of doing something you love be prepared to have your credability questioned everyday. I am sure there are some genuinely gifted psychics working those psychic line too. I think no matter what format you can reach people through use it, as long as you stick to what you believe you'll be fine.

Saying that I believe Acorah is a sell out and gave into the pressures of producing results for the livingtv cashcow. Fry & Stockwell are still genuine in my opinion and the fact they dont always deliver is a sign to me that they are good. I worry about those that get outrageous results all the time.

Have never really watched Edwards but most people i know love him.

I don't really see anything wrong with 'selling out' and going on TV in it's own right (I wonder would RTE be up for covering an investigation down in Charleville). I think the problem is really the pressure that generally goes along with it. If the TV execs start hyping an hour long special in a haunted castle and they go and setup all the equiptment and crews and stuff, something *has* to happen. They can't just walk away and hope for better luck next time.

I suppose a better way to do it would be for them all to just do their own thing as normal and whenever they got something TV worthy to make a show out of it, instead of having schedules and deadlines to meet.

edit:All I really know about John Edwards is from south park episodes, so I'll reserve judgement for now.

I used to watch Most Haunted a good bit, but I slowly found it getting less and less...well, believable. After I read that story about Acorah and Creed Kafer I completely lost interest.

I havent seen or know of Gordon smith but I don't doubt that he'll go the way with the rest of them and develop a super ego before long.

[edit] was thinking also, John Edward who really pioneered big celeb status for psyhic mediums jumped onto our screen in 2000, right before sept 11. After the events a lot of people started looking internally for answers and there was a huge leap forward in the whole spiritualism/spirituality movement, especially in the states. John's show (and other pm's) became very credible and mediums began to serve as preachers for the non religious tv masses. They seemed to provide the answers that people couldn't find elsewhere. Perhaps it's served it's purpose.

I also wondered why he suddenly kept getting possessed (started about series 3). Ahem, ratings mustve been flagging.

I think thats the real problem with this type of tv. You cant trust em not to start making it up.

I hope not. He always said he would never take payment for his gift, but now hes writing books, and Im sure hes not on tv for free. Maybe its like 6th said, you do what you must to reach people, but...

if derren brown can do cold reading Im sure anyone can with a bit of practise. I'd say mediums/psychics exist alright, but they are as rare as hens teeth.
