Water - and the body

I know we are recommended to keep hydrated and drink plenty of water - especially when trying to lose weight

But my problem is this - surely the body shoudl regulate itself and by this I mean the following.

I am drinking around 4 litres of water a day and nothing else (no caffine, etc) and I finish my intake of fluids well before 9 pm.

And yet I have found that for the past few weeks, I am up, like bloody clockwork - going to the bathroom at the most ungodly of times which in turn leaves me absolutely wrecked the following day - especially if I am going to the gym in the early morning.

I was recently at the docs getting my BP and colesteral checked and all is ok, etc. Should my body have adapted to this intake of fluid already or am I actually drinking too much.

I should also point out that I go to the gym every 2nd day with a high emphasis on cardio workout with some weights

This sounds normal...I'm doing the same thing and am up and down.

normal it might be, but its a right pain in the ass - especially the tiredness the next day from complete lack of decent night sleep

How often are you waking up? And when are you going to bed/waking up (offically, not for pee-pee!).

I drink a litre a day and no matter what time I go to bed and how tired I am I am guaranteed to wake up at 7am to go for a pat cash..grrrr

the answer will lie in the colour of your urine.

    what is it?

being more precise, is it more yellow or clearer? how does this differ from its colour during the day say after a meal?

does it have a strong smell at night? does it smell at all? what is the approximate volume you urinate at night?

what is the approximate volume you urinate during the day in total 24hrs?

what is your salt intake like? what is your diet like?

what is the consistency of your stools?

I would go usually 2-3 times too, and would feel really awake in the morning, also it can make it easier to get up because there is another push for the toilet!

Sportswears questions hold some valid points, however, some may be a little sensitive!

light yellow after first meal of the day, clear on drinking of water

no smell - nearly a full bladder

depending on how much water i drink, it could be a ridiculous amount

comparably low - I dont add salt to my foods and I am already on a low salt diet

hmmm havent checked in a while, too busy reading :) Seriously I would say average (if they can be described as such)

Doesn't sound too unusual - maybe half the male population have to get up and relieve themselves during the night. Slow kidneys I'd say

Only point of warning particularly if you're older - frequent urination can be a sign of prostate problems. Apparently an enlarged prostate can press against the bladder and cause the need to urinate.

Your Doc can check your prostate easy enough -- not too nice an examination though

Hmmm I did consider that - but I also considered it being slow kidneys and that I am actually consuming too much water - is that a possibility?

A good test --- go into a bar with the boys. Have say four pints of beer at say half an hour a pint.

See do the other guys go to the gents before you ? It's only an indicator but if it happens all the time, then you've got slow kidneys.

Hence getting up in the middle of the night
