Using FTP when connection to DCU network

Help!! I currently need to FTP some files from my laptop which is hooked up to the DCU network in the library. I've configured my computer to proxy.dcu.ie and can access the internet but cannot access FTP.
I went to computer services and they set it to port 21 for FTP using proxy.dcu.ie but it still doesn't work.
I keep getting the message - "the proxy server is not set up to allow full access. To move, paste, rename, delete files, you must use a different proxy"
It then says to go to http://www.dcu.ie/remote/ (a non-existent link!) for more information.

Does anyone know what proxy settings I should be using to allow FTP. Computer Services don't seem to have any idea!!

I think you need them to open port 20 and 21

The correct port number is 3128. Still doesn't work though! :(

FTP normally goes through port 20 and 21. Data goes through one port, control bits go through the other. You need both open afaik. Never heard of FTP using 3128.

Unless the host you are trying to connect to is using 3128, in which case maybe you should get them to change to a regular FTP port number (20 or 21).

Yeah, it sounds weird but that's the port that DCU uses for FTP according to the computer services centre. I've never heard of it before either.

Weird... every time I've needed to do anything over FTP all it's needed was [username]@proxy.dcu.ie:21

...where [username] is the host you're connecting to.. password goes in the password box..

You could try tunneling via an SSH server if you can't get the proxy to work as is... need to know someone with/have a secure shell account outside the DCU network (i.e. not redbrick) first though.

    <edit>Explained that badly.

In the FTP server box of your ftp client, put proxy.dcu.ie
in the port box, put 21
in the username box put [username]@[server-to-connect-to]
in the password box put your password
    </edit>

Andrew is right. If your trying to connect to an ftp server that's not on the DCU network (and Heanet I think) you have to set the server your connecting to as proxy.dcu.ie and put your username in as username@ftpserveraddress. When the proxy gets this info it'll redirect you to the server you specified.

Port 3128 is the default port of the proxy server (Squid)

I use http://www.web2ftp.com/ when I have to do any ftp-ing from dcu.
