Can you get a hotel cheaper than booking direct?

I'm just wondering is it possible to get a hotel cheaper than booking direct on their website? If you do a search for a hotel you'll always get thousands and thousands of results for website like http://deals.hotels.com etc but they never seem to work out cheaper. I also read about a website called priceline.com. Has anyone used this? How does it work? Am I right in saying you "bid" for a room?

    Thanks in advance.

I noticed the same yesterday. I was trying to book a night in the Conrad in Dublin for a special occasion but the Conrad website seems to be much cheaper than the "discount" websites.
Did you try Trip Advisor for foreign hotels? It uses 5 different discount companies in its results. Also most hotel's own websites are room only, whereas often the price displayed on some discount wedsites is B&B.

I have got hotels cheaper both here and abroad by booking online.

in my own personal experiences, ive always gotten cheaper going thru the hotel/discount websites. u have to be patient, and u have to search through a few of them, i know a lot do come up when u do a search, but IMO its worth it to save a few quid ;)

It depends on the hotel. I have got hotels in America cheaper through a travel agent than on their website because the travel agent had a deal with that particular hotel.
