I am planning on buying either the 20D or 30D (finally crossing over to digital..I feel so cheap and dirty!) My question is, is the 30D much improved upon to merit the higher price tag compared to the 20D? Or should I go for the 20D and pay a bit extra on a better lens? Cheers.

I'd get the 20d and better lens, the 30d was'nt an upgrade of the 20d, it was a modified 20d here is a comparison on dpreview.

If I were you should have a look at the Nikon D200, very nice camera, also Nikon have the egde on canon when it comes to wide angle lenses, the canon wide angle lens 28mm and down are not as sharp as other brands. I currently use old olympus zukio 21mm f3.5, 24mm f2 lens on my canon 1d mii, they are much sharper than any of the canon wide angle lenses I have used and that includes 16-35mm f2.8, 24-70mm f2.8, 14mm f2.8, 17-40mm f4, 24mm f1.4. That said, all my gear is canon and I'm really happy with my setup.

here is a link to a comparion test some guy done on wide angle lenses,

Id agree and say go for the D20 and a better lens.

The d30 was a huge dissapointment I think for most people.

Generally, i don't pay much attention to 'pixel peeping' and such like, because i don't think its that important and its usually splitting hairs, but the difference between those shots is unbelievable...

As you say dalk the difference is unbelievable, sharpness wise I would expect alot better from canon especially the wide L lenses but that is not the case, thats why I use old manual zuiko lenses for shooting scenes with great detail.

...also has anyone used AC-Foto.com to purchase gear?

I placed an order with them in January and was very satisfied. I think the general consensus is that they are good to deal with.

Aren't they the bomb? I have a 50mm 1.4 at the minute, it's such a fantasticly heavy piece of glass. I love the pictures it produces in terms of sharpness and contrast.

I'll certainly build up a nice collection of fast Zuiko primes before I even think of buying anything else. Maybe an Eos adapter so I can use them on my Canon body

Beans I have a 21mm and 24mm and they are excellent, I use an Kindai brand om to eos adaptor, these will allow to focus to infinity were as some cheaper brands need won't, you can get them through the us via, there about 200dollars including shipping

For me, this comparison is not worth anything. First, primes should always outshine zoom lenses. There are more elements in a zoom and there is going to be image loss no matter which way you cut it. Second the 17-40 is a terrific lens - I don't have one but I know many people that do and it really shines. Its a really sharp lens. I have a Canon 24mm and it is sharper than the 17-40 but then that's what I would expect.

I have yet to find any zoom match a good quality prime. I have also yet to find any Sigma lens that matches any good quality Canon.

elderman I had a canon 24mm f1.4 and done a comparison test with the 24m zuiko lens and the zuiko was alot sharper. I have a canon 16-35 and I will keep it, but I know its limitations.

I must say that I've a 20D and think it's a brilliant camera. I've tried a Nikon but thought the Canon was so much better. Personal choice, I know.

I've not seen a 30D in action, but from reading all the info and reviews, it has some nice features, but nothing nearly worth the price difference.

The lenses will always make a difference.
