Station plan may be derailed by Cormac Murphy, Evening Herald, 18.04.2006

RESIDENTS in East Wall have lodged a planning objection to plans by Iarnród Éireann to build a €28m docklands railway station.

The move is part of an ongoing battle over what the objectors say is excessive noise pollution in the East Wall area caused by the rail company's operations.

A spokesman for the residents said an objection was lodged with Dublin City Council this week against the propsal to build a station at Spencer Dock in the north inner city.

"If they start building the station there will be an increase in the noise. We've made it clear to Iarnród Éireann we're going to object," he pointed out.

The spokesman added, however, if the company addresses their concerns the residents will be in a position to withdraw their opposition to the station.

The planning objection is just the latest in a series of battles people in East Wall are having with Iarnród Éireann, with an adjourned court hearing due to take place in May.

The case was taken after the company failed to deal with complaints about excessive noise pollution coming from nearby railway tracks.

While he would not comment on the specifics of the court case, a spokesman for Iarnród Éireann said the company always endevours to be mindful of it's neighbours.

"The sound generated by the railway is through operational requirements.

"Also, in most cases, the railway has been there for well for over a century and if people are buying property beside it they should be aware there will be railway sounds," he said.

If Iarnród Éireann, gets planning permission for the Spencer Dock project, it will be the first new station in the city centre for 116 years.

Transport Minister Martin Cullen said it will pave the way for a train service every 15 minutes along the Maynooth-Dublin line.
