    Palliative care. There's a start.

What about sexual health? Nurses are always very involved in that area, from giving sex education at school to nurses handing out condoms in Africa.

Nurses in the UK can now prescribe the pill and look after the family planning of the practice. This is pretty much as the result of sexual health campaigning and promotion lead to doctors becoming too busy to deal with all the queries for contraception.

or the five A's. A Health Promotion tool used when any health professional comes across a smoker.

    Ask about smoking status
    Advice to Stop
    Assess willingness to quit
    Assist with stopping

and i forget the last one, but you'll find it online. I know it seems small, but you could delve into the subject and really pad it out. Back it up with psychology for nursing theories like Social Support and Self Efficacy, and tie it in with Sociology too. Loads of padding available.

www.healthpromotion.ie is the governemtns health pro website.
If you are in trinners, go to the healthpro GET folder for Gobnait Byrnes files on Health Promotion.
And gobnait has info on WebCT as well.

Health Promotion is a massive area.

Try posting your question on www.irishnursingstudents.com/chatforum and see if anyone there can help.

When i was a smoker i never ever had even one of the As from the many and varied health folk i came across. Well, they may have started on the first 'A', and got the 'yeah, i smoke, but really, i'm here about my broken toe. my painful broken toe. did i mention that my broken toe is hurting?' response.

to be honest, i don't think many doctors even know it exists, and a large proportion of nurses couldn't be arsed. they have enough to do without adding a Smoking Cessation care plan in on top of whats already wrong with the patient.
I know thats wrong, but its true.

Technically every smoker should have a smoking cessation/substance misuse referral sent, but it doesn't happen.

I'm going to be a bit of a stirrer here as well, and suggest an off the top of my head reason why i never got any of those As - i would be presenting as an articulate (albeit grumpy, hate being sick/going for medical tests) university student, it's a given that i knew smoking was bad for me and would probably have an awareness of all the smoking cessation aids. Is it easier for medical professionals to be stating the obvious to less assertive patients?

And, like wheresthebeef has said above, nurses just don't have the time.

Actually, i've a question for any nursing students out there - do any of you or your class smoke? And, when on placements in hospital what level of smoking would you see among the staff there?

That a very diplomatic way of putting it, I'd prefere "Theres only so many times you can take being told to fuk off, before you stop asking"

The amount of nurses who smoke is unreal. Walk by D'Olier Street any lunchtime and you'll see at least 20 students outside smoking. Staff Nurses are just as bad as the rest of society at smoking.
Which in my mind is proof that knowing the risks, and education is not a key factor in why people choose to contine smoking. There are other factors at play.

That exact conversation occoured between myself and an A&E doctor recently. This scares me.

yeah but i bet ye know Seán. He's such an economics head. Always trying to apply economical theories to our discussions, and simulating things on graphs.

Edibility, nice to see the system is working somewhere.

Yes, I know Seán very well. Don't get him started on U-curves...

I'm sure that your familarity with Seán could be expressed by some kind of a U-Curve plotted against Time.

    I'd say so too.

Make sure to ask him about my downward-sloping curve of number of friendly pheasants versus amount of academic work completed.
