Try Israel and the Kizbuttz and Moshav's I was there for a few summers and was a pretty go experience, just type one of the two into google and you will find loads of info

Try Concern or Goal, those charities normally have opportunities abroad.

    went with i-to-i

    very organised

had a great time... once in a lifetime holiday/experience and all that

they're franchised out so i suppose it depends where ya go. what made you say steer clear of em? what happened to you?

also a friend went with teaching and projects abroad last summer to romania and had a great trip, planning again this year. so check them out too as well as i-to-i

i just think its far too touristy. its like a package holiday. you pay extraordinarily large amounts of money to go somewhere very organised for a very short period of time. they just want your money for the projects. it seems far to on the beaten path or something.

but if you enjoyed it then maybe i have the wrong impression of it.

if you can get in this is exactly the kind off stuff you want. real proper NGO charity work.

but generally they are looking for people with skills and qualifications and have extensive training programmes for people they take. they employ as many people from the country they work in for manual work(makes sense) and use skilled labour from volunteers. unlike something like i-2-i who will take anyone as long as they have loads of cash

    you know what you're right

it can be like that... depending on the project you pick. a good few of the volunteers were (actually most) were rich kids on a gap year who really didn't have a clue and were there to score and get wasted every night. but i suppose like most things its what you put into it. i had a ball and learnt a lot

it can be pricey but ya have the extra re-assurance.

really, i'd recommend it, made so many friends and soooo many great memories.

the good thing about it is you have the project, but, they're flexable so you can travel around the country as well in between or after. ie thats why i'm still in africa right now surfing my arse off!!
