Hi I wonder can anyone help me. I was in the local Philips shop looking at an impressive 32" HD tv for about €1500. The guy in the shop explained to me that I could get sky+ for €300 and full package for €30 for the first 3 months and pay €60 per month after that. All HD channels will be included.
Is this true? Is the Phillips TV worth it or are there better models out there. All advice would be appreciated but I don't speak gobbledegook so i would appreciate it if explanations were kept simple. Thanks

The new Sky HD box costs £300 in the UK so it's unlikely that it will be €300 here! The existing Sky+ box is around €130 at the moment (I think). The deal with the half price package is for all boxes (regular Sky box, Sky+ and Sky HD).

There is going to be an additional charge of £10 for the HD channels in the UK so expect a charge of €15 here.

Looks like the guy in the shop was trying to make a quick sale.

So the current sky+ doesn't have the HD channels then.

No. Sky+ doesn't support HD. You'll need a new box for that.

I pay about €63 a month for my Sky+ subscription, and that is the basic package plus all the movie channels and Film Four.

Exactly as Shane says. Some Irish users have apparently signed up for HD. €450 for the box, and €15 extra on top of the normal subscription.

Regarding the TV, go to www.avforums.com - > forums -> LCD flat panel TVs and then search the forum for the model number you are interested in. You may get some advice.

There are always people who hate certain brands. Philips is possibly as good as any... However (sounding a bit like Watty) if you can wait I would wait. After the World cup prices should fall somewhat, and next year they will be much cheaper. Still you could wait forever if you listened to that argument! maybe you want a Tv for the world cup?

I assume the TV is "HD ready"?

    Ix.

The editorial in the current(April) issue of What Satellite suggests that there will be NO extra charge for the HD channels, once you've paid for the Sky+HD receiver. You'll get the HD versions of the channels you subscribe to(if they're available in HD, presumably).

The thing about waiting is October 2004 I went looking for a new tv and was close to buying a 32" widescreen for €1500 as I have an ordinary Sony 29" and said I'd wait till after xmas as there was no improvement in the picture, went back after xmas and saw a plasma for €2,200 so thought I'd wait and now we have HD's for about €1500 so I was really glad I didn't buy the widescreen. Thing is every salesman in every shop says there is no way the price is coming down untill the next time you go into the shop and you see significant reductions. Like the old computer joke 'how do you know if your computer is out of date? Open the box on your new one.'

I received the product and pricing information today, It's €449 for the box, plus €15 HD subscription, and your regular Sky package. It wouldn't make sence to have HD coming in and Sky not making any more money.

Any deals for new customers (use wife's name). Probably wait till after the World Cup. Also the whole telly thing is very confusing it doesn't seem to be any decent new TV's out there. Look at http://www.hdtvexpert.com/pages_b/reality.html
