Some of the SMEDIA shortlists are up:

    http://www.oxygen.ie/page/374

    and

    http://www.oxygen.ie/page/375

A very respectable showing from Trinity News, including Stargal (woot), and two writers for the travel section which just identifies them as 'trinity', don't know which publication they wrote for.

Nothing for the Record or TFM, yet anyways. Lots of nominations for all the colleges with media courses, Griffith, Ballyfermot, etc.

Yeah good number of shortlistings so far. Both travel writers are indeed TN, and we have 4 of the 6 shortlisted for Features - Arts and Review! Looking forward to seeing the rest of the shortlist in the next few days.

How does this compare from previous years Andrew? Just for my own curiousity.

    Well done by the way.

    congrats!

anyone know what the story is regarding dual-published articles in the national media for the smedia awards?

i published some articles this year in the papers with a co-author, but wasn't sure if i could apply for the national media section. Just out of interest only, i won't be a student next year (fingers crossed!)...

    Well done by the way.

If we pick up two more in the other categories it will be the most shortlistings ever. I would be hoping for a good few more so it's looking good.
    congrats!

Don't know what way it works to be honest.

I don't think TFM entered; besides, it's always the media colleges (Griffith, DIT, DLIADT, Ballyfermot etc) that get shortlisted in the radio categories because it's part of their course work so the standard is very different to Trinity, UCD and DCU.

The Record will be nominated in the overall paper categories (Newspaper of the Year, Editor of the Year and possibly Layout and Design) anyway. Was surprised they didn't have anyone in the Arts & Review section cos some of the articles in the Film section and occasionally the Music section have been v strong.

We ended up with 15 shortlistings, up from a previous record of 8 so with a bit of luck hopefully we'll pick up an award or two tomorrow *fingers crossed*

Tom Dillon was also shortlisted for editor of the year so altogether Trinity has a very respectable 16.

Awards are tonight. We'll post up if TN wins anything. If not, let's just kill this thread cos it'll be too depressing to see it here.

TN was great this year, I'd be surprised if you didn't run away with a large amount of them.

Thanks Donal. I dunno. Was really confident up until about a day ago, now not sure. It's like when you've studied loads, written a really excellent essay that you're really happy with but then start getting worried about the standards of everyone else's essays. Worried we'll end up as the Martin Scorcese of the awards.

    So that's where sandals went!

Also: Well done, you damn hacks, (hack, in this case referring to a derogatory term for journalist*, in keeping with what I thought was its real definition. Unfortunately it seems to have been adapted by "Social climbing" types in an attempt to mirror the recent thread for large american coloured gentlemen to call each other "nigga" and more recently for homosexuals to call each other "queer". Well, I'm telling you now, a hack is a damn journo, so call each other *****, you *****. in place of inevitible asterixs (astericies? asterixes? asterixi? asterixii? kasterix), read "plural form of chauserian term for female reproductive opening")

*tabloid journo maybe? or maybe a journo that expresses an opinion, which journos shouldn't be allowed to do, unless of course it's an unbiased opinion of a product or service, like a pest control firm, which, if you think about it, is both. Unless you don't count the poisonous stuff in your living room as a product, in which case it would merely be a service. In which case you would be wrong.

P.S.: GO the physics department, if I get me a postgrad position I'll try and squander as much of that extra million as I can from said humble position. HA! What does bess need anyway? Books? fake tan? PFFT. damn ponces the lot of you!

I'm in Texas again feating on tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, tamales and quesadillas. Its 30C and we keep getting mad thunderstorms! We were on tornado watch on tuesday and severe thunderstorm earlier that day.

Not much happened, but its bizarre when the weather people say "If you are outside, TAKE SHELTER STRAIGHT AWAY!!" and "If you live in a wooden house, get into a closet or bathroom and stay away from windows, NOW!!"

    Cool

Big Congrats to Trinity News and Andrew Payne its award winning Editor for a fantastic show in the Student Media Awards for sweeping up with a record number of nominations and 4 of the top awards including "Editor of the Year" for Andrew's work in Trinity News.

Trinity News has led the way in Student Journalism and exposed many of the scandals of funding in Trinity. Fair play and keep us informed.
