This could be a blessing in disguise. Broadband for schools, anyone?

Blessing ? dunno !!!! . Ildanas customers were amongst the most utterly desperate of rural users....because they had to be to go VSAT with wifi distribution :( Wouldn't mind but Ildana/Pure were pimping large when Aramiska shut down in Feb and charging full whack for the gear as well.

Thats a few grand wasted this year if you look for another VSAT provider tomorrow.

True, but mabye another provider can step in and use non VSAT backhaul? Are even wireless links uneconomical for these areas?

The Govt will have to get something done about those schools cut off. If a provider builds infrastructure for the school, mabye the local community could use it too? That's probably hoping for too much though.

I raised this point with the Dept of Comms (they were handling the technical part of the Schools BB for the Dept of Education) even before the vendors were announced. I was told that 'sharing' of resources was not possible because of the need to route the schools BB through heanet, and the overhead involved in trying to allow others to use the bb.

To me this seems to be the easy way out and a great opportunity missed, especially in rural areas.
