BF2 not liking 7900gtx...

Just recently i finished building a new high spec machine and along with that i bought BF2 thinking it would be a great game to test it out as it would'nt install on my old pc. The only problem being that when i run BF2 i get some severe graphical anomalies that end up making the game totally unplayable. I have included some examples below. I have been in touch with EA support over the last week, had several replies suggesting i try all manor of things to try and resolve it, but as of yet i'm still unable to enjoy a proper game :(

    Pc Specs are as follows:
    Motherboard: Abit AN8 32x
    Cpu: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
    RAM: 2x 1Gb OCZ PC3200 PLatinum Series
Gfx Card: BFG 7900GTX 512 MB OC (drivers 84.21)
    Windows: XP Pro SP2

So far every other game is running like a dream, except for this and judging from EA's last response i'm not going to be able to play this game at all and it's just tough s**t.
"This issue could simply be due to the GPU on your graphics card processing the information it receives from the game a little differently. This could be for a number of reasons but mainly I believe that it is because the chipset is far more updated, technologically speaking, than those chipsets for which the game was originally designed."

Anyone else got a 7900GTX with BF2 working, i'm sure it's not down to that card, but that's what EA seem to be saying to me.

Anyone any other suggestions as to what i could try?

All I can recommend is that you make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card.
Getting in contact with nVidia could also be helpful, if that doesn't resolve the issue.

Yeah graphics drivers are up to date alright as are any other system drivers i could find updates for. might actually get in touch with nvidia, never thought of that, they may have a better idea what's causing it. :(

Turn off all the settings in the Nvidia settings window, the AA, AF, buffering etc and then run the game and see what happens.

Uninstall your drivers and re download the new driver and install.

Failing that, try going back a driver revision or so.

Had a problem similar problem with radeon drivers before: went back 2 driver revs and everything worked fine.

Tis prob a driver issue, especially if your card works for everything else.

Cheers for the reply's, so far i've defragged all my drives, and set everything to the lowest settings for the graphics card, but still nothing.

Uberpixie, i have the latest drivers and have tried 3 different revisions, first off the set that came with teh graphics card 83.62 i think it was, i tried going back to the 81.98 but those drivers did'nt support the 7900 GTX so that's when i went for the latest set the 84.21. Still not getting anywhere, even after i reformatted the problems still remains :(

Looks like I'll have to come and take that card away from you seeing that its causing so many problems.

Thanks alot for the link there spears, seems like it could be an issue with the card itself then :( reading a bit more into it on some forums now and might just drop BFG a line and see what they have to say about it.

Try dropping it back to the default core speeds. It'll still be plenty fast.

Cheers for that spear, i did indeed try dropping back the clock to reference speeds and low and behold it works fine now, played a solid hour of BF2 and not a single artifact could be seen :)

Next port of call is contact BFG and see if they will replace this bad boy with one that can actually handle the upped core speeds :-\

looks like i spoke too soon :( after leaving the pc for the afternoon, came back to settle in for a good game of BF2.....within 5 mins i had the problem back again even with the core/ram dropped down to reference speeds :(

Is your PSU powerful enough for the 7900GTX?
How is the ventillation of your case?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Eye

Ventilation in the case should'nt be a problem, have plenty of good airflow around and temps never raise up by that much. as for the PSU it's a Hiper Type R 580w SLi Ready PSU. Not got a whole bunch of stuff in the case so power should be fine, The Abit guru software show all the voltages are remaining solid.

Only thing i have noticed though is that from time to time i was getting random reboots of the system, most noticably if i ran azureus for 5 mins the pc would just reboot without any errors, now i've gone and knock off the windows startup/recovery option to reboot and now when i run azureus it keeps the BSOD on screen instead of rebooting, just looking into that now to see what's causing it but it looks like it could be just and irq sharing issue with the network....will look into it a bit more though.

Have you tried to turn off the fast writes and sideband adressing?

disable the onboard NIC and put in a cheapo 10/100 in the pci slot as a test. Its probably a plethora of errors in the hardware, but the above bit can be a starting point in finding them.

This is rather disappointing, I was planning on getting a 7900GTX in the near future, surely this cant be happening with everyone?
