Well, besides clogging pores and aggravating the sebacious glands, hence the appearance of more spots, scientists and dermatologists have yet to discover problems associated with the excessive use of false tan. I read somewhere that it can cause cancer, but doesn't everything allegedly cause cancer these days?!

Yeah ive often worried about this too.I cant see how it would be damaging as you only apply it to your superficial layer of skin.It doesnt penetrate like uv rays. Also your skin gets rejuvented every couple of days so if it is causing any harm it will be shed in a matter of days anyway

It's not damaging unless you've an allergy to DHA, which is quite rare.
Otherwise, apart from the odd spot, it's fine.

    Shallow shallow shallow...

Seriously using fake tan is so noticable on a girl no matter how little is used and makes you look like such a shallow looks are way too important than they actually are kind of girl. Stop using it and let people see the real you.

Well if it makes her feel better about herself, whats the problem?

I wonder if there will ever be a "fake tan" thread here that doesn't have someone slatting it.

I wouldn't think there would be many side effects anyway, apart from the odd spot of course.

Like chemicals in general on your skin are not good news for anyone over a long time, including a lot of makeup too, so the less you use of any of it, the less age you will show over time. But don't listen to me or any of us posters for that matter, cause we are not expert, but a dermatologist is so talk with one of them, or otherwise visit a derm web site hosted by one of the medical schools. Like I am really the wrong one to say anything, cause I tan in the sun and look good and natural now, but may show it someday a few decades away.

Something else you might want to consider, too, about using chemicals or going natural. Smell chemically treated skin and then smell naturally tan skin, and I think you will notice the difference.

Like surf's up and the rain has almost gone here in So Cal, with choppy but good sized 8' waves in Tamerak, so I'll be out again to soak up that Vit D and not the chemicals while you guys sleep.

Read Here - All about DHA
and here - what BUPA have to say about fake tanning lotions.

There's also an interesting article about them here.

Out of pure curiosity I've read a few articles about it now, the main worry about fake tan seems to be that some may consider it as protection from the sun and suffer the consequences of not having adequate protection from the UVA rays(i.e sunburn). I'm sure everyone's aware of the damage the sun can do.
Apparently even those fake tan lotions that claim to have an SPF factor aren't adequate either.

The DHA in the lotion itself can cause 'Contact Dermatitis' (link here all about it) but an allergy to DHA has to be present for this to happen.

I never said that there was a problem but for some reason I've always had a problem with people who in order to feel good about themselves need to put on a mask shielding who they are from the outside world as apposed to being open and show people the real them, manifesting this externally or physically.

Nobody is 100% happy about their body.

You could say the same about make-up. Do you not like that either?

A lot of people find tans more attractive than pale skin, a lot of people think they look better when they've a tan. Many of those same people don't want to use sunbeds and with our climate won't be getting a great tan any time soon so they use fake tan lotions.
If people think they look good, they feel better about themselves.
I honestly don't see where the problem is here.

    l:

My mum always used to say this to me when I was growing up that makeup ruins your skin, but dont you find its quite the opposite??
If I dont wear my lancome foundation for a week or so I find that I get spots and my skin doesnt look that great. If I wear it everyday I find after a week my skin looks fab.Maybe its beacsue it has a spf in it,antioxidants and vit e?

Also If you look at celebrities who wear makeup ever day.Lots of them have great looking skin when there older e.g madonna etc

AFAIK, using fake tan would be about as dangerous as using a moisturiser or shower gel or something of that nature.
