I'm looking for one of those mp3/picture views where i can either connect my camera to it and copy pics over or read sd's? seen a few but they seem pretty crap, or mad expensive, i think the ipods do it but i'm really quite anti ipod and they're disgracefully priced. any recommendations?

It would nearly make more sense to get
a laptop and a card reader.

but then again you cant fit a laptop in
    you jacket pocket.

But if i had to choose I would go for an
    iriver.

I have the H340 ... marvellous little 40Gb MP3 with support for video (avi), mp3. wav, flac, monkeys, wma, ogg and just about any codec you'd want for music ... also has radio and recorder ... and can do jpg slide shows ...

one small compaint is it only has USB host 1.1 ... which is slow if you use 2GB cards and shoot a high proportion of RAW like me ... can't remember exactly but I think it takes well over 1 hour to back up 2GB pro CF card ...

... you would be better finding a player supporting USB host 2.0 ... but if money is a problem I'd say you would pick up the H340 cheap ...

... just to be clear my H340 also supports USB 2.0 for reading/writing with PC host ... but not for host/on-the-go connection to a card reader/camera ...

I've got the ipod accessorie for downloading from the camera ,forget it its slow and by the time you download a 1GB card the ipod dies.

Personally i'd stay clear of devices like that for another year or so ,there still overpriced. You can get devices a lot cheaper that just hold your photos but don't have a colour screen ,plus the battery lasts aswell.

EDIT: heres a link for such a yoke http://www.technikdirekt.de/main/en/computer/digitale-speichermedien/mobile-datentraeger/861880/-/Article.html?fillspace=1

I've only a tiny card, so i can't take that many pictures, and i go to a fair few gigs where i take alot, i dont want a dedicated one, i'm looking for a new mp3/video player too, and i was just seeing if i could sort out the small card issue too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Trust me, if you're doing gigs, your better off getting more memory! You don't wanna be stuck uploading pics while you miss some great shots!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 650 ✭✭✭EireRoadUser

I really would wait if i was you ,if you're determine to get a vid/mp3 player try and hold off for a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

Ok well if you want a vid/mp3 player dont buy one thats good at been a stroage device. Anyway you've answered your own problem... You've got a tiny card. Get a 1 or 2 gig card and you will be fine. Also, Try and think a bit before you take so many, more then likely, useless photos!

Whenever I take shots in theatre and where there's coloured lighting ,I always take 4 shots for every shot if i can. A lot of the time what you'd think is a great shot is shaken ,I suppose though anyone doing these photos knows this anyways .

from DotOrg's FAQ on Music Photography

"And by simply taking lots and lots of pictures. The more you shoot, the more pictures you'll get in focus. If you don't take lots of pictures, you won't have lots of great pictures."

I do lots of gig photography too, and iv learned thru experience that because im shooting in low light conditions and because the lights are changing all the time, the best way to get good photos is to take loads of photos and pick out the best ones afterwards.

Agreed, I'll always shoot off as many as I can. I used up a 512MB card when I while shooting American Headcharge in the 15-20 minutes I had in the press pit. Ended up with some useless shots, but ended up with some great shots too, that I mightn't have gotten had I not taken so many! Every gig I do, I expect to come home with full cards.

I've seen 2 Gigabyte sandisk cards for as low as 85 euro ,I think i'll be getting one myself.

I tried my IPOD again last night with the latest update and it would only download .jpg files from my camera ,at about 9MB a minute speed
The drive I gave a linky for does a 1GB card in seven minutes.

DotOrg's definitive guide, oh all hail..

    A) thats concert photography, slightly different.

    B) when i said dont take so many photos i mean only take a few, i mean dont take the ones u know aren't really gonna be great, like u can kinda tell you know. Still just get a bigger card

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 650 ✭✭✭EireRoadUser

I thought it was better to buy branded memory cards ,as non branded can be less reliable ??

I could be completley wrong ,but if a card was even slightly dodgy ,I'd bin it.

Not necessarily true. Transcend have been around quite a while. I have a few for various bits & pieces and have yet to have any problems.

    I think 60Euro for 2gb 80x CF is a good deal.

Some reviews of CF cards, dpreview is a bit dated but we do see transcend along with the more recognised brands.....

The Galbraith site is quite good - has performance by camera model.

oh ok, but still at a gig u take loads of pics, if ur going mountain hiking you may not take quite as many, it depends on your style of photography.

I have two 1gb cards and a 40gb portable HD. I've never yet filled one card up before I've emptied the other one into the HD. All three were fairly cheap, no fancy gadgets needed!

Even while traveling, there'll surely be an internet cafe, and if not, a pharmacist that you can upload your photos onto a cd!

An all in one solution, would be a 4 gig card...Give you plenty of room!

true true, a 4 gig would solve the gig issue, and, true about the pharmacy, hopefully... but the convience of popping the card in to a media player, and loading it up, whilst also i can keep all my music/few movies whatever on it while travelling is what i'm looking for that epson link looks very good, its got everything i want...might look into that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Again, my problem with gigs is, your gonna need the space as you take the photos, you won't have a chance to do anything like uploading until after the gig!

If you are going to use it for video ,check the specs for battery life with video.
Some untis only play a movie on a charge, also the bigger the screen the less battery life .
Also some units come with a built in lense for recording video and taking pictures, all the best with your decision.

Are those USB sticks 1.1 or 2.0 USB?? Judging by the 110 naming convention I'd guess they are 1.1. I can't find any details on the site though.

the expansys link device has 50 minutes power on a single charge at 480mbps ,but sometimes thats the bus speed between the pc and the drive and not the card to drive speed.
You'll need to ask on the high street about these devices.

I agree, at gigs, like sports events, speed is key, and big cards come in handy.

For travel tho, depending on where you're going, the ould pharmacies are pretty handy for transferring stuff to cd. For places where thats not an option however, the epson is a nice little device though it is quite expensive, and a small laptop might just be a better idea in the long run.

I think what you mean is are they USB 2.0 Hi speed (there is a version of USB 2.0 called rather confusingly "full-speed" which is only as fast as the old USB 1.1!)?

If so, the answer is yes.
