    Trescothick explains tour absence

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/england/4897358.stm
England opener Marcus Trescothick, who left the tour of India after just 12 days, says he is keen to return to the national team as soon as possible.

"I had to leave India because I picked up a bug and it hit me hard. I could not shrug it off and it left me fatigued," he said.

    ...

He now says spending time away from his family was part of the reason, and insisted illness was the main factor behind his departure on the eve of the Test series.

    ...

On Tuesday, Trescothick admitted that spending long periods away from his family was becoming an issue.

"We play so much; we spend 300 nights a year out of our own house either travelling the world or at hotels preparing for games in England," he said.

"There are times when you have to understand that you need to have a rest.

"Touring Pakistan and India are probably the hardest you can do, because it is not easy to take your family away to that part of the world. You spend a long time away from home."

Firstly, fair play. He's the first to crack at the strain that touring is affecting his personal life. If it wasn't just coincidence that illness took him home, I hope the authorities now understand that international cricketers can't do the schedule as set out, and I still don’t believe that the new plans still don’t help.

England are the worst affected by touring, as they can play cricket over a 12 month period. Look at the Aussies. They've played cricket non-stop since last June, and now have a break until October. But for England, who have their own home series to look forward to, will not have had a decent break of more than 3 months since before last years West Indies tour, and will still be playing in the World Cup this time next year. They are the only test team that has to play in the southern winter, and the southern teams only head north once over the course of 4 years.

Something has to be done. It's lunacy.

Great points. The players and their personal lifes are breaking. Christ, flintoff missed his wife gving birth, thorpe's marriage broke up....i could go on.

This has to be complete rubbish.

If he had a virus then the Team management would have released that, if for no other reason than to reduce the pressure on him.

There has to be another reason that he still doesn't want to discuss.

Having said that he is spot on about the player burn out. All you have to do is to look at the Irish team to see the demands on them, and then multiply it 20 fold for a test team.

I would say, that if the team allowed one person to get off the tour, cos they were tired and emotional, it would've had the impact of Flintoff, Strauss and other long timers looking to get home. Looking and reading between lines written in the media, the ECB probably buried the actual news, so as to grand his wish, if there was more to just his illness.

If England have this schedule, they should look at keeping one or two of their senior players rested for each away series.

My solution to this would be to end the one day games or use then as a prep for players on the fringes of test cricket and OD specialists.

Then, and this would be controversial, make those are established test standard players part of a panel which would not play county and cup cricket at home. They would remain on the books of whichever team they have signed for but until they cease to be regular international players or simply have had enough, they only play for the test side.

    Mike.

I think its pretty obvious that it wasn't a bug that he had in India. The reason he was in tears (allegedly) was that he received some bad news regarding his wife and is best man if you get what I mean.
