On use of been vs being

...and possibly some other common mistakes as well.

People, "been" and "being" are clearly two different words. Normally I would suggest trying to speak a sentence aloud if you were considering using "been" in it. However, I think the reason this mistake first started is that people keep dropping their Gs when they speak.

    Correct:
    I was being silly.

    Incorrect:
    I was been silly.

    Similarly-

    correct:
I was seeing a girl recently.

    Incorrect:
I was seen a girl recently.

Do we all have that clear?
"Been" is one syllable, not two. If you want to use a two-syllable word, chances are you want to use "being".

Also, while I'm on the subject, please learn the difference between "thought" and "taught".
    Examples:
-I thought this was all cleared up.

-I was taught by teachers in school.

By the way, if people want to start calling me a grammar nazi, or refer to grammar nazis, please be aware that grammar is spelled with two As, not an A and an E. The plural of nazi is nazis, not nazi's.

Thank you all for your time. :D

Here here! The amount of grammatical errors on here is incredible.. People seem to be unable to differentiate between there, they're and their.

Firstly, "they're" is short for "they are". "Their" represents ownership, an example would be: "Their shoes are red".
"There" should be used as follows: "There are alot of people in the pub today".

    Thanks for your time.

I find then/than rather annoying aswell.

For example, when someone would say "I prefer frosties rather then rice crispies" when they should have used than.

Sorry if I'm been anal here, but it really annoys me.

This isn't a bitchy thread, this is to make sure people know the difference. Hence why I didn't put it in the SC forum.

Here's another one that people usually spell wrong:

    quiet means silent, not noisy

quite means WHOLLY, COMPLETELY, <not quite finished>
    2 : to an extreme : POSITIVELY <quite sure> -- often used as an intensifier with a <quite a swell guy> <quite a beauty>
    3 : to a considerable extent : RATHER <quite near>

Some people have bad grammar, others have bad threads.
Should these rants be placed in the "get it off your chest" thread?!

i'd usually let that slide, but this thread is so pointlessly anal that i just couldn't resist.:p

    This is NOT a rant.
I am trying to educate people here.

Another one that gets to me, it's just a spelling mistake but it's really common.

    "Definately/definetely" should be "definitely".

Incorrect use of apostrophes really annoys me too, for some reason.

Also, most people use "lol" in the wrong context, the correct context for it is:

Non existant. This term should not be used. Ever. By anyone. Ever.

I believe you mean a lot, not alot :D

Also, I think that a full stop between "ownership" and "an example" would be more appropriate. oooo, how exciting! I get to give out about grammar. Yay!

Oh whilst there's a thread open on this; it's ridiculous, NOT rediculous...I'm always amazed at the amount of people with otherwise seemingly good spelling/grammar, that consistently spell it wrong.

Oh and I'm currently having a very meaningful debate via PMs on the over usage of exclamation marks...the use of them in place of every full stop doesn't add anything to your post, other than to make you appear to be an ardent 10 year old with a terminal case of ADHD.

One that bugs me, for some reason, is the use of loose in place of lose.

Agreed. On the Internet, the only thing people know about you is the text that you type in your post. If you can't be bothered to edit your posts for spelling and grammar, you come off as lazy and stupid. This may not be the case, but that's the image you give others.
    sjones wrote:

I see this everywhere. People need to remember the sentence "They're there in their room". It illustrates the difference in one fun-sized line.

in case you were commenting on my use of exclamation marks, the sentences in which I used them were exclamations and, as such, required an exclamation mark!!!!!!!1111111111onehundredandeleven

No no...someone else..I have absolutely nothing against them used in their proper context.

I don't see why people get so anal about spelling/grammer on boards, i mean if you undersatand it why bring notice to it, if you can't thats a different story, my grammer online seems to be very bad, however when i write with a pen and paper or speak i'm 99% correct most of the time

"I prefer frosties rather then rice crispies" when they should have used than.

No, they should have used to, and the "rather" is superfluous, unless they were using the conditional tense, and even then it's debatable. Also, don't forget to capitalise the brand names!

"I prefer Frosties to Rice Krispies."

    or

"I would prefer Frosties rather than Rice Krispies."

    Shreddies are clearly FTW.

One thing that always seems to piss me off is "The add for xxxxxxx product"
Is it that hard to check how many Ds there are there in "advert"?

Good post tman.... lets cut to the chase..... people who don't bother their fat butts to take any care with grammar and spelling are just lazy slobs, and no amount of smart post or insults will disguise this.
Anyone can make an odd typo, but FFs... some of the posts here are 3rd class national school standard.

Shouldn't it be I would *have* gone mad?

Also, everybody does this: Enter your PIN Number.
