external hdd makes my pc freeze

    sorry but when ever i start send stuf to my ex hdd the pc freezes about 2 minutes later can anyone help me with this the hdd is a toshiba 320 gb.

    the only thing i can think of is that maybe the USB port is in trouble, you could try re installing your usb drivers, or if you're using USB 2.0 make sure that the USB 2.0 drivers are installed and its not running on USB 1 versions. You can check this at boot when "Enhanced USB" should appear somewhere.

    the only other thing i can think of is that your RAM is becoming completely saturated by doing the transfer. How much RAM have you got and how big are the files you're transferring?

    80gb i folder is and i got 1gb of ram.

    well transferring an 80gb folder will put a bit of strain on the pc alright if it's across USB.Does the same problem occur with smaller file sizes or if you do the downloads in pieces?

    another option if the hard drive and your pc supports it would be to try using a fire wire connection instead of USB

    I had a problem like that last year I updated the chipset drivers and that solved my problem.
