It's not. And Work would be the better place to ask this.

It's a bank holiday, but not a public holiday. Work aren't obliged to give you the day off and be paid, but if you're lucky enough to have it, then parking is free in town :)

We have it as an concession day. If we work it, we can take another day off in its place.. Usually works out well, its a sh*t day to have off because everythings closed!

I don't think so, it seems to be totally up to your company if they want to give you the day off or not. If they don't, then it looks like you aren't entitled to any extra money.

Its a holy day of obligation so (afaik) you can take the day off (not sure of the pay situation) and not get in trouble with your employer.

I have it off so I dont care.

The pubs are shut for some stupid reason though so there is no point in me wasting a days holiday for it.

My company closes for Good Friday and I'm forced to take it as a day from my annual leave. A bit unfair IMO.

Bad company! I know a lot of firms that have training days or days out on that day but also a lot allow an extra day in your yearly leave to account for that day. Perhaps worth mentioning to them if you get on with them and they're approachable.. ;)

    We're a strange breed!!!!

Those of us who have to work complain because we have to work & those who are getting it off are complaining because they have to take it off!!!

    Will we ever be happy????

Ouch, that's a bit harsh. Though if you get 22 days or more a year, it isn't too bad.

Nope only 20 days - but in fairness I have other 'benefits' so if I complain I might just rock the boat a bit too much. On the other hand there are others here who don't have any benefits so it's mor unfair on them really. Others have checked into it and apparently it's all legal.

No we'll never be happy, we love moaning and never happy until we're giving out about something. It's all part of being uniquely Irish, its great. :D

I have never heard of that.
Some are moaning that they do not get it off, why not ask for it off like any other day? Thats what I can't understand, I have never heard of a company that gives it off as a free holiday i.e. paid for and not from your annual leave. If a company does do that then I just consider them to be really giving you an extra days leave.

Your company must give you 1 months notice for any forced holidays, so if they only told you last week you could demand to work it, or be paid.

I remember in one place they had a vote about it. Went around asking who wanted it off about 2 weeks before hand. I was questioning people why didnt they just ask for it off in the normal way 4 weeks in advance if they really wanted it off. The person doing the vote wanted the day off and was asking in a leading way "you mean you actually want to come into work?" as though you were a freak!, I was replying "no, I just want to choose when I take my own holidays". It is a bad day for many since they can get nothing done, like visiting the bank or shopping etc.

If I came into work on monday and was told "eh, there was a vote and we are all taking the next 20 days off starting tomorrow", I would be rightly pissed off.

In here, it's treated as a public holiday, so day off with pay [not from holidays]

I get it off and get paid. Happy days.

double time, and i start late and leave earlier:D it works out as only about 2hours more than usual in terms of pay but 3 1/2 hours less work. to be honest its good friday, theres **** all else to do and theres never any business so its an almighty piss up on thursday for me and a handy number for recovery.

as to being able to take it off with out consequence, as long as you tell your employer its for religious reasons theres feck all they can do. its in the constitution, you have the right to worship on days of religious obligations. its one of those anachornisms like women not being forced into the workforce for economic reasons if they want to raise a family in the home. no ones actually taken a case but its STILL on the books so considering whats going on now what with both householders having to work its only a matter of time ;)

I don't get paid double time or nothing!! Usually the company I work for pay double time on holidays but not Good Friday... I thought they might even cut some slack and time and a half!! but alas.. its single time :)

what about all the other holy days you must work? do you feel hard done by on them too?

will or must?? I have never heard of this. We used to get a holy calender from a religious aunt each year, almost every single day of the year is a holy day. I would love to get time off to go to mass everyday.

I havent heard of many mates getting it. The day is taken as a holiday mixed in with their compulsory christmas holidays in every place I ever worked. I know people in past jobs I was in did think it was a free day off until it was pointed out that the holiday was taken from leave. i.e. they didnt add up all the public holidays around christmas properly, I think there is 3(?) they were counting as though there were only 2 since they knew they got 20 days per year, but 5 were compulsory, they thought they were ALL at christmas.

Maybe some companies are simply ignorant to it. If I was a company I would make sure people knew they were getting a bonus, seems some dont know how good they have it. I do consider it an extra day of annual leave even if it is not specifically said so. I would tell people they have 21days annual leave and easter is a compulsory holiday, rather than saying you have 20days and get that day off with no mention.

I think it is passover today, anybody on double time?

My last few companies have given us the day off, without it coming out of our annual leave allocation. They do make it clear enough that it is a bonus though. Probably easy for me to say because I do get it off, but it wouldn't bother me hugely if I did have to work it as we get the Monday off.

Me too, we must be working in the same place:D
For those who want it off but don't get the day off you can refuse to work on religious grounds. My cousins husband works in a jewellers that is normally closed on Sundays but coming up to Christmas is open all weekend and he point blank refuses to work 7 days per week and has always refused to on the grounds that it conflicts with his religious values. Which is funny really cause he never attends church or anything.

I suppose, holy days that I don't get paid extra???

Regarding the religious thing, yes, sure you can get it off on this basis - if you give your employer enough notice and no, you do not get paid. It comes out of your annual leave - like any other holiday.

Many employers (including mine) give it as an extra "free" day (along with Christmas eve). So effectively we get 22 days rather than 20, but these two are fixed (along with generally 2/3 days between Christmas and New Year.

On another topic - has the law changed regarding drink on Good Friday? I noticed (through spam from BusyBeeDVD) that the Laughter Lounge have a full bar until 1.30am on that day.

I dunno if its a must, maybe they make you bring a note from the priest to proove you were there ;)

my point is that almost everyday of the year is some sort of holy day, so if employers allow you not to work sundays or good friday "on religious grounds" then you could chance your arm with all these other days.

The feast of St.Bernard is today boss, I am off to mass at 1pm. (aka cheap food sale in dunnes)

Hmm must ask the local high priest of satan for a note!

Wonder what all these easy going bosses would do about people of different religions started wanting loads of days off.
