so basically my video card decided it would be much more fun if it blew smoke and smelled bad than actually do its job. I now have a pc that wont switch on so i need a new card.
any recommendations on where i should shop? (offline around dublin)
    what card to get?
will i have problems installing it seeing as i cant preinstall any drivers? or is that a bad idea anyway?
before it blew up i had an ATI 9800 128mb card (agp)

maplin or petes are your best bet in dublin city center. i think PC World do graphics too

but tbh you're better off buying online, the saving you'll make could mean you can go out and get extra memory or something at the same price

Well you only need to know this:
    7600:Low Range-Cheap
    7900gt-Mid range-Somewhat cheap
7900gtx- ONE EXPENSIVE MOFO WHICH WILL MAKE YOU SELL YOUR SOUL:rolleyes:

His motherboard is AGP the only GeForce 7 series card on AGP is the 7800GS.

Something like an AGP NVIDIA 6600GT or ATI X1600 Pro should be fine.

Drivers wise, download the latest ATI or NVIDIA drivers. Even if it is a new ATI card you are installing uninstall the ATI driver and Control Panel and power off system.

Install card and when it gets into windows cancel new hardware found wizard and run graphics card driver installer it will do the rest, on the next reboot it should be up & running.

Do you mean you cant turn it on because there is no video card. Or it wont turn on??

If i wont turn on at all, I think more than the video card was damaged:(

Did the smoke come from the card, or the AGP slot?

    Anyway what your budget?

This is the best AGP card that has survived:p

No you shouldnt have problems installing it because as far as i can remember when you are installing agphics card with no other display system the graphics card will work on the lowest resolution /colour settings .I think im right there will someone please confirm this?

I mean i can turn it on without my card. and everything (according to the diagnostic lights and my various senses) seems to run as normal. but without anything to plug my monitor into im kinda buggered.

My budget at the mo is a pathetic 100euro. i might push up to 160..peats only has the one agp in stock, pc world are bástards (new thread on the way perhaps!) and have yet to try maplin. id prefer to get it offline since i dont have the time (nor credit card) to wait.

anyway thanks for all the suggestions guys, you've been really helpful.

I went for this in my new box
    http://komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=317391&view=detailed

Im happy with it, although I did change the cooler for a zalman, which is still pretty loud, I need to get a case controller for it.
It's nifty though, has dual DVI out and svideo out.
does 16,000 fps in glxgears, and has 512 MB RAM, can never have enough tbh.

    100 isn't pathetic...why not go second hand? There's a guy on the FS forum selling a 5900XT with asking price of 60 - I'm sure he'd accept 45/50 :D

It similar performance wise to 9800 as well. But if you want to upgrade over what you already had 100 notes second hand would probably get you an okay card...it depends on what it is you mainly do with your PC!

ok so this is what i went for.

    http://komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=300465

yeah it slike super low budget but i expect most of the games i have to run fine on it still. most hassle ill probably get from it is quake 4...
I'm not mad into the gaming as much as i used to be so even if it isnt the ideal card at least its a cheap fix (i did not have the money for anything beyond 150) and my pc is up and running again...was freaking out on saturday, thought both my hard drives were fried or something!

thanks for all the help guys..

I would get the 6600gt if you could stretch it, the 9550 is a downgrade from your old card,

Even a 6600 for €116 would be decent

yeah well like i say i *bought* the 9550. i just needed the computer up and running again... i realise the clock speed is quite crap.
i ran it through lost coast and while it did look pretty it chugged along.
ill get a proper one in the summer if i have the money but i haven''t got 300 euro to my feckin name never mind for a video card.
