well, if they're not in a hurry, you could send it by ship, although I'm not sure how long it would take to get there, but it'd be cheaper than Fedex.

Sea Freight will take I'd imagine 2 months minimum from shipping to transit to collection. Definitely the cheapest option for large weight. a full 40 ft container would cost in the region of €1,500 by sea freight.

time doesn't matter.... they are spening two months touring the continent before going. Any idea what companies are best to look for quotes for?

The first thing to ask your self is Do you REALLY NEED to take household goods to U.S.?

Most household items can be purchased cheaper in the U.S. then in Ireland, ALL your electrical goods will be useless in the U.S. unless you want to pay for adaptors & invertors for them.

If the goods are big & bulky, i.e. furniture etc... then yes Seafreight is your best option but be prepared to pay highly to move them.

Most shipping lines will not carry personal effects unless they are professionally packed, i.e. crated by moving companies.

Moving companies themselves whilst very professional in their packing & moving your goods their charges can be very excessive, the cost of moving some goods can be more than the worth of buying them new when you arrive to the U.S.

There are many moving companies listed in the golden pages such as Oman moving & storage, A&A Cronin & Beverly Smith movers...To name just a few.

If you go down the route of a moving Co. then they will quote you from your door Ireland to Door U.S. Including all Customs formalities etc, but if you go the DIY route by dealing with shipping lines you may need to either insure your own goods as shipping lines will not insure personal effects or request that you sign a disclaimer releasing them of any liabilities for the loss or damage to your goods.

Good luck in what you do.

thanks for that. But my friends are yanks and need to take a certain amount of theis stuff with them. They also need to have an idea of costs so they can decide if a big garage sale here and buying fresh when in the States is more cost effective!!

Hi I saw that you were asking about companies that ship goods by sea to the states - I know few container companies who could put you in the right direction these are just a few 1. ACL - Atlantic Container Line 2. Aquaship Agencies 3. Aseco - All are really good to deal with and if they can't help you they will point you in the right direction :)

Aer Lingus do a cargo service. When I was moving I had 6 suitcases full and I knew I had to pay extra for them but they let me away with it anyway, even though I offered them the monies :)Give here a try
