One of my mates puts two cups full of oats into his shake and mixes it with water and a protein supplement, just wondering, is it effective taking oats like this or do they need to be cooked?

 I dont know why anyone would do that - that sounds MINGGGGIN!!!

Your best bet is to put whatever amount of oats into a bowl and mix with the appropriate amount of milk (some people use water but milk is SO much nicer), heat it in the microwave for 1 min to 1 1/2 mins, stir it, and heat it for another 1 min to 1 1/2 mins. A tasty and nutricious breakfast.

What do you mean by "effective"? In terms of GI value, or intake of vitamins, etc?? I know that cooking oats slightly raises it's GI and Im totally guessing now but normally cooking veggies reduces their vitamin content so maybe same applies to oats? Dunno..

A really nice breakast is oats, with chopped nuts (brazil nuts, almonds, etc) and some fresh strawberries (or any other kind of berry) & raisins. Chuck in in a bowl, cover with milk & leave it in the fridge overnight. Yummaaaaayyy!

I do this when it's too hot (ie when Im abroad) to have a hot breakfast.

Yes it is, it's a little tougher to digest them as someone else mentioned, but I would suggest at least grinding them up or you'll have top chew your shakes :D .

BTW 2 cups is alot of oats - your mate must be pretty big (one way or the other)?
