    Hi,
Just got a pop-up window promoting ErrorSafe, to find system errors, repair and protect.

As I have never heard of it, wondering if bona fide/good/bad/ugly?!

Run a spyware scan on your pc right away. My rule of thumb, never buy\download anything that says it will get rid of spyware and errors on your system in a popup windows. Do you see the Irony of it?

Its a well known piece of crap. get rid of it right away.

Good programs do not advertise themselves in pop-ups.

Having said that, I did go and google "ErrorSafe"; here's the gist of the results:

    ErrorSafe is spyware.

Are you getting these pop-ups while surfing the net, or on your desktop?

Try running one or both of these on your PC. Ad-Aware and/or Spybot

Edit: @groundedplane - Launch it right away?!

    Thanks for the helpful replies.

Yes I can see the irony, was very suspicious of it because it popped out if nowhere and because it had a logo like the Windows Update one, yet no mention of being part of Windows. Error Safe also a plausible name especially if freaking people out and then making them think they will be safe !!

Nothing from it on the desktop. Presumably it came from surfing. I rarely click on ads in general.

I have Spybot and AdAware. usually run Spybot once a week. Has been a few weeks since AdAware. running it now. :)

Make sure that their definitions are up to date. Then scan in Safe Mode for better results.
    Also, run Windows update.

You might also find a move to Mozilla FireFox will help prevent spyware infections.

Pop-ups that are not related to web-surfing (i.e. they are not opened by your internet browser) are usually trojan related. Using firefox won't prevent this, as it requires that the user download and run an infected file - something that would occur (or not) irrespective of browser.

@ OP: I suggest that you try running a virus scan in addition to the spyware scan... just in case.

I have AVG anti-virus which i always update and do a complete scan once a week, which is always clear.

Spybot has been clear for quite some time

My post does not say prevent. It says "help prevent". The default security of Firefox is superior to IE in several respects, one being encrypted filenames in the cache which helps prevent the trojan from executing (Amongst a whole host of other features. Not even mentioning extensions.).

Smileygal: What program & definitions versions are you running?
How often do you see the pop-ups?

    Hi,

    Spybot search and Destroy 1.4

    Ad Aware se 1.05

    AVG 7.1.385

It was only one pop-up and it hasn't appeared since. Nor any new suspicious ones :)

I just realised I hadn't done the Immunize feature on Spybot for a good while, so have done that. Maybe that was the problem.

A good rule of thumb is to ignore any ad designed to look like a Windows XP window.
