    Hey,

I am buying a Gps receiver for my laptop and looking for the best software to get. Was looking at Microsoft Autoroute?

I've used Route 66 both in the US and Europe with my iBook and it's great. I also used on board a flight from Newark, NJ to Orlando, FL and while the signal dropped sometimes I knew exactly where I was for most of the flight.

I've used AutoRoute 2006 with GPS receiver....you can throw the laptop in the back if you like...that's if your speakers are up to the job....failing that...on the passenger seat. One thing to note about AR2006 though is that if you go off route you have to manually click a button to recalculate your route from your current position.

I put my laptop on the passenger seat when I was on my own in the car. It can be difficult to see in strong sunlight. It also means that you kinda have to pull in and stop if you need to consult the map in detail- Route 66 has no voice commands:( it does list accurate directions in text format - so a copilot makes the job sweeter. When I was in the US I put it on my wifes lap and she read from the map:D

It is actually allowed but not during take-off, approach and landing - I checked in the booklet in the seat pocket.

The receiver was a little USB antenna with a magnetic base. I got it on the web - some place in Florida - I'll try and get the link and post it here

Oh I know, I use my laptop when on planes but usually wilkl stick in a DVD and sit and watch that to pass the time while on the plane.....abit nerdy to sit on a plane looking at a laptop to see exactly where you are

I woul rather sit and watch some porn on my laptop:D

Agreed - but I'd accidentally left my DVDs in my suitcase in the hold - so I got bored and started looking for something to do - Then I spied the antenna in the laptop case!!!
