Close encounter with a "street-walker"

Hi, this is my first post ever, so hope it's pitched in the correct way.

I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on the potential legal situation had the following situation which I found myself in on Saturday evening worked out for the worst? I haven't given it much thought until now but it occurred to me that I could have very easily been in a very tricky situation.

At around 9pm I was driving along Waterloo Road D4 and was about to turm off the road into a lane which would take me towards my house. As I was slowing to make the turn a girl rushed from the pavement and appeared to wave me down. To me it looked like something was up and I noticed that a couple passing at the time seemed quite bemused. Anyway, figuring she was in some distress I pulled over and began to lower the car window. Before the window was down she opened the car door and leaning in asked me if I knew where Wellington Lane was. She was extremely well-spoken and sounded like she was from England. I told her that I had heard of the Lane and thought it must be close but was unsure of where exactly, as I've only been living in the area a short while. At this stage it occured to me that she must have gotten off the bus nearby and was now lost. I thought about it for a second and just as I was about to offer her a lift to help her find where she was looking for she said 'Listen love, are you looking for business?'

At this point the penny dropped and I replied 'No!' and promtly drove off. Just as I rounded the corner into the lane towards my street I spotted the Garda cruising in a patrol car. They have quite a conspicuous presence in the area I have noticed.

My question is, what if the Garda had chanced upon me during my encounter with the stret walker, or worse, had I offered her help and she got in? On the face of it, I'd say I'd be trouble. How would the law stand against me if they assumed the obvious and not believed me?

I doubt if you would have had any problem as you stated you were near your own house and you can prove that you use that route on a regular basis, they could have checked that out. You would also have establish if the onus was on the Gardaí to prove you were kerb crawling.

On a personal note, I would not have considered offering her a lift or letting her in my car, you leave yourself open to all sorts of allegations, but would have given her the local Gardaí number or called them for her if she was genuinely stranded. I would have also reported her actions to the passing Garda car for the collators at the local station. Prostitutes are dangerous people in all sorts of ways. Try driving in future with the doors locked if you are going to be using that route.
