Can anybody recommend a good selection of art house films of which I can purchase to show for next years first years for the film club? Our film club is fairly small and still not off the ground yet and I have no idea what I should look for...well I know that the Americans can be okay with the auld art house but I know there is much more out there to be explored. If anybody can help I would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Craig. (Head of Film Club, GSA).

A few that come to mind which may fill the criteria :

Three Colours - Red, White and Blue (France).
    Amelie (France).
    The Idiots (Denmark).
    Pi (USA).
    Das Experiment (Germany).
    Irréversible (French).
    Y tu mamá también (Mexico).

Here are just a couple off the top of my head that many may not have already seen.

Io non ho paura (I'm Not Scared) - Italy
A nice little film set in rural Italy about a kid who finds another kid locked up in a hole in the ground.

    Tesis (Thesis) - Spain
About a college student doing her thesis on voilence. But she stumbles upon a snuff movie.

Carlota Joaquina - Princesa do Brazil (Carlota Joaquina, Princess of Brazil) - Brazil
A pretty funny film about the birth of the Brazilian nation.

    Subway - France
About a guy lives in the Paris Metro system with lots of other strange characters. Yes, Chisthopher Lambert used to be in good films.

Raise the red Lantern (Hong Kong/taiwan/China)

    City of God (Brazil)

    The Sea Inside (Spain)

The Best of Youth (italy - although i dont think you can get this on dvd here, and it'd be a long cinema club cos this film is over 6hours...)

We will be ordering dvds over line and get them from shops in Ireland so It doesnt really matter if they are in Thailand!

If a student wants to see "The adventures of the Thai Monkey" then we will order it over line for this person.

Thanks guys so far for the help.

Actually who made the "City of God"?

Fernando Meirelles did City of God, he recently did the Constant Gardner.

I wasn't hugely impressed with City of God, when it comes down to it, it was your fairly standard gangster film that you've seen a dozen times before.

But they did get some good performances out of the actors alot of whom were actually from the favelas.

There is a TV series they also did, called City of Men. BBC 4 showed it a while back, it wasn't bad.

Primer really is outstanding. One of the best films about time travel ever made.

Yeah, I just saw it at the weekend. Amazing film.

Thing is, first time through watching it the DVD player skipped the 2nd last chapter on us. It was only when we were watching the director's commentary afterward, to try and make sense of the film, that we realised we were missing a whole seven minutes or so, which is pretty vital in something as complex as Primer.
