    Hello,

I was wondering is it possible to setup a simple home network that would enable a 3.5 yr old dell POS to communicate with a dell POS laptop for the purposes of wasting time playing a network game of football manager?

Is this possible without complicated wiring/expensive capital cost?

    Am i crazy?

Ive looked on the internet but my knowledge of networking goes as far as untangling a neglected table tennis net :(

ha!after all my 127 posts in 4 years, i have just seen there is a dedicated networking thread! *hits self on head with shoe* apologies

Do both machines have networks cards???

Presuming they do then what you are looking for is a crossover network lead, just plug it into the port on each computer and your connected, (if you want to share files there's a little more to it).

An alternative is to get your self a network hub or a switch (switch is better, tech reasons) and two straight wired network cables (as opposed to the crossed type earlier) and again plug the cables into each computer but this time plug the end of each cable into ports on the switch, if you get lights on the switch then your connected. This option is a little more expensive but it will allow you to add computers to the network later on (up to the number of ports on the switch you get) and if you get an adsl modem router (again bit more expensive) you will be able to share your BB connection too.

    :)

Most modern DSL routers will also have a 4-port switch built in.
