My laptop has seen 4 different operating systems including linux but it has never ever been capable of charging the battery. It is currently running a recently installed Windows 2000. Its an old compaq presario 1200 model.

I have download the driver for the 1200 model from driverguide.com
The battery is plugged in and nothing is happening.

There is no icon in the sys tray for any chargeable devices. I don't have any icons either in the control panel for charging.

It would be nice to have a battery that operates.

battery charging should be software independent.

Are you saying it never charged ever? You run it off mains all the time?

had you been able to charge it when its turned off?

because this should work regardless of the OS.

Is it new? you should get that checked out pronto. could be the charger, battery, or mother board. lots of possibilites ranging in cost from €60 to €600 to sort :(

If the charger is broken, i should be able to fix it for a few euro. If the laptop's broke, then you're fecked.

Find someone with the same (or similar) laptop, and see if their charger charges your laptop. If it doesn't, your laptop and/or battery is fecked.

Its usually the battery thats the problem in this case, especially in older laptops.
As mentioned above the battery charging is software independant.

Have you tried a different battery in it?
