Stay Active During Trinity Term

    Hello Boys and Girls,

Some people start saying to themselves "OMG Exams are just a few weeks away I have to stop doing XYZ". However, I'd encourage you to maintain some physical activity during the final term. If you like playing football, basketball, jogging, going to the gym, try and do this once or twice a week over next term and exam period.

There are usually lots of really fun stuff organised during the Trinity Term, for example, 5 a side football tournaments, interfaculty basketball matches, 7 a side rugby, stuff like that. It's also the start of the Cricket season (assuming there is one). So try and take part, even if you're a bit rusty and haven't played since school ( or primary school!).

Of course, a lot of clubs wind down at this time of year as Varsities and Colours competitons are finished. But this makes it easier for people that haven't been that active to come down and particpate.

I won't patronise you (further?!) by saying Exercise is good for your health, or increasing physical activity will keep make your memory sharper. But I hope at least a few people will read this and decide to go back to Boxing, Football, Fencing training etc.

Hopefully the college won't be so difficult when it comes to playing informal impromptu football matches on campus etc.

so if you have any ideas, questions etc. please post them here. I'm certain I speak on behalf on everyone involved in sport that it's never too late to join a club and start playing. If you have any questions regarding particular clubs I don't know the answer too I'll contact the people and direct them here etc.

    GG sport.

If you're afraid you'll be too lazy to do exercise, just throw random insults at MaxBax and he'll chase you with his axe. Fear combined with running and screaming is great aerobic activity.

Was hoping to bring a ball in and have a knock about, is this allowed?
I know it says keep off the grass and all that but what about in summer, theres not going to be too much damage done to the grass. And why don't they ever leave the goals up at the pitch after matches? I see the odd few lads having a puck around hurling but never anybody playing there apart from matches.

As far as I know, you aren't allowed to use the cricket pitch (and surrounding green areas) within prior permission from DUCAC I think? You can get away with it for a small while, but in the end you'll get thrown off it.

Plus if the goals were left up, and someone damaged them, who would pay?

Yeah thought as much, permission to have a knock about such bull****.

Goals wouldn't get damaged but if they fell over on someone (next to impossible) or somebody got injured playing football on the pitch they could claim insurance which the college is afraid of. They should change the pitch lengthways and get rid of that cricket pitch IMO, even though it'll never happen.

Its the one drawback of having such a central location, lack of pitches.

U mean play there? Probably a case of permissiona again.

Or are u giving an example of a pitch?
I just meant in comparison to UL or UCD they have much better facilities for sports thats all.

I think Ducac allow ppl to play games on the rugby pitch. I'll check and find out.

I remember a number of games of ultimate frisbee and soccer going on on the rugby pitch last trinity term anyhow - might actually get involved this year :)

Tch... you should just take up croquet! They're always playing, and the season's only just starting!

I've never been to UL (and hopefully never will) but I'd rather see more academic space in college than more pitches. Sports people are fit, it's no bother for them to go to Santry. Cricket pitch and rugby pitch is more than enough for an inner city campus.

yeah i was talking the ul people and they just went on and on about how we have a proper library so you win some and lose some in terms of all colleges.

and for even more pro-sports and excercise propoganda there's some terrible matthew macconhay movie so bad i can't remember the name thats full of gratuitous nudity and the messages, god i good, good i say and that excercise makes you lucky, happy, wealthy and gets you laid. And i suppose in extreme cases the latter of these is absolutely true. in all other cases sports and excericse, make you happy due to endorphins and get you laid, but are more likely to get you hurt than make you lucky, and wealth is for people with actual skill coupled with deidcation and drive. But you know get out and have fun.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for a University, especially, a premier university, to have a reasonable amount of open space. Not necessarily for sport, but for general ZENNESS. But then again, the priorties must be academic.

anyone up for a kickabout at some stage when it starts to get a bit warmer and drier?

You don't know "bad at football" until you've seen me. I can't actually kick the ball in a set direction. It just moves from a to b (and only sometimes). Ah PE, I'll miss you like a boil on the arse (although, I did perfect my Daria impression, so it wasn't a COMPLETE waste of time).
Not necessarily for sport, but for general ZENNESS.

Yes! More plants and more green spaces!

I think a boards frisbee-athon would be more fun.

I really hate frisbee but I was thinking it's a more nerd friendly game. we can't have 6 goalkeepers! john2 can u throw a frisbee in your locker?

They let people drink and smoke on the pav pithces place but not let them kick a football? Where's the logic in that? Not all college studnets are hippies you know

I really hate frisbee but I was thinking it's a more nerd friendly game.

See, that's what I thought, but having just spent two days playing it against annoyingly tall and athletic people who seemed to outrun me every single bloody time, I'm really having to rethink that. Plus, everyone knows the rules for football, which is a help.

"Two For The Money". Bleh. That's two hours of my life I'm never getting back (and we never did get to see the psycho mutants). But it was totally worth it for Anne's hysterical laughter after the 'heart-warming' speech in the middle.

Well. You're allowed sit on the grass. I'm not certain, technically, around the pav you're allowed to drink. In practice this stetches all around and within the grass area.

The cigarettes can ruin the grass area too.

Just remember people are supposed to be playing cricket on this area and generally you don't play football on the cricket pitch (?)

If by nerd friendly you mean no hooliganism, then yes. I did more running with frisbee than I ever did with football. I'll bring in a frisbee no hassle. We can always have both, so when security kick you all off for playing football we can all play frisbee and vice versa.

Technically you have to get permission from the rugby club to use that pitch but you see a lot of kickabouts on it after late April or so when their season finishes.

You should get the futsal for the 5 aside. It's good craic and only about a tenner, maybe a little less, for the session so it'd work out about a euro each. I'd be up for that.

That would be a shame, I think. It's a fairly good cricket pitch for a university.

Yeah but I've no interest in cricket, hence my one sided view. Not that its ever going to happen getting rid of the cricket pitch. Frisbee could be good if it was played like Rugby maybe, I vaguely remember the rules being explained to me but its a bit different I think.

Futsal looks decent, great value. Pity the astro surface is the old flat sandy type instead of the new grass like surface which is sooo much better.

Haven't exactly stuck to the new years resolution of gym once a week so I'd be well up for any kick abouts.

Yeah they have that new type of Astro in UCD, it's class alright.

I think Ultimate Frisbee works like American Football roughly.

I've killed myself on astroturfs a number of times - my old school had a really rough couple of courts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,024 ✭✭✭Awayindahils

astro truff is evil but not a patch on dry savana courts, the cuts ooze sand for days.

Anyway as for the actual foot ball itslef i was the target in gym class more than a particpant in any game, so ill go watch... from a safe distance, a very safe distance, possibly with a set of binoculars from the pav,.
