you can NOT be good looking AND intelligent!

Before becoming a registered boards user I had not realised that it was indeed impossible to be both intelligent AND attractive.

It would seem that should any of our female posters post a photo of themselves on boards, and then be fortunate to receive a compliment on their appearance from a fellow boardsie, that inevitably, their IQ will drop in the estimation of their peers.

"What the fcuk is he talking about?" I hear you say. Well, allow me to give you some examples.

Kiera, a regular here in after-hours, her opinions hold as much credibility as the next boardsie, that is, of course, until it transpires that she is somewhat attractive, this revelation results in her opinions being dismissed and rubbished by her peers, and with an undeniable branding of stupidity.

Silly Sausage, another regular here on boards, known for the creation of lively, debate filled threads such as 'No Forward Planning EVER!”
We know that SS has graduated with a degree, we know that she is a fairly educated young woman.
Again, her opinions held a level of credibility, her posts brimming with witty, INTELLIGENT, observations; we boardsies respected her.
But Silly Sausage made the mistake of posting some pictures of herself on Boards, and again, once it transpired that she was indeed quite pretty, we boardsters questioned her intellect, and she has since become the object of some totally unnecessary remarks.

Kiera and Sillysausage are not the only boardsies to become victims of this downfall, I have noticed many of our female users have been burned at the hands of some of our pass remarkable posters.

But I focused on them in particular as a result of this comment:
    koneko wrote:
MAJD is right on the money, and is just saying what a lot of us think.

I preferred the internet when people like Kiera and sillysausage couldn't figure out how to use it because it was so so confusing for their little brains. Sure it's hard to cram actual information in there when it's so full of insecurities and gossip.

    From this thread:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=51134108#post51134108

And I had to ask, what gives koneko, or anyone for that matter, the right to question the intelligence of anyone else?
What is he basing his opinions on?

Do you know the girls personally?
What is your motive for such a comment?
The fact that they, like many others, posted their picture on boards?
Is this enough of a reason to brand someone 'stupid'?

I don't think so, and I would be interested to know what the rest of you have to say on the matter.

I heard a a story about central Europe somewhere where they wanted to do a reality TV show on fashion models based on the assumption that they were beautiful but dumb. The first woman they tested for their show had an IQ of 169 :D

What if you're really gorgeous but posted a bad photo? Or if you're not the prettiest, but had some Photoshopping done? :)

Seriously though, one can be both.

Think all the proof will be provided by this C4 show later tonight:

I read your post and I can tell you I find that appalling. Did people like koneko ever hear the saying "Never judge a book by its cover" before? And in this particular case they actually read the book before they saw the cover!!!
    I find that just sad...

And now I'm off to look for Kiera's and Sillysausage's pictures! :D

Intelligence is often confused with knowledgeable.

We all judge people on what they look like wether we like it or not. Say you pass someone on the street and their facial features look really mean or angry - you're going to see them as a mean person but chances are they could be the nicest person you'd meet.

I'm gorgeous and quite intelligent. Anyway what annoys me is that when kiera or any of these people post anything on any thread, a load of nerds start kissing up to them with compliments and agreeing with everything and such.

    Under the average what?

I think your missing my point, the fact is that no one should assume that any of the posters here are stupid, not based on the fact they they may have received some positive attention because of their appearance.

    Its just wrong.

So you're saying Koneko is wrong in what he said?
Have you even read the said posters messages? I don't blame him for what he said whatsoever.

And yes, yes you can be both good looking and intelligent. Why not take into consideration good looking posters (and there are plenty of them) who DON'T hi-jack every thread they can and fill it with gossipy bollocks and in some cases pick fights with randomers because their going through PMS(true story).

Koneko was merely calling a spade a spade or, saying what everyone was thinking.

It has nothing to do with their appearance, it's to do with how they act on boards on this site (that makes people say things like Koneko said).

I am sorry, I really disagree with you, I don't beleive they hi-jack a thread with 'bollocks' anymore then Tar, Pighead, ladylotts, shock_treatment, tbh, or you for that matter.
It doesn't make them stupid, and it certainly does not justify anyone branding them as such on a public forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 888 ✭✭✭Merrick

I agree with dahooligan, from what I've seen, it's not just keira or SS that fills up space with bollocks. A lot of threads degenerate into nonsense without their help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,754 ✭✭✭✭Princess Consuela Bananahammock

I don't think it's non-existant, but it is rare. The more attractive a girl the more suspicious I am that she'll be... not nessecairly unintelligent, but boring.

Most of the attractive women in this city have the same routeine: work - pub- sleep - work - pub - club -sleep. They seem to sit back and let the men they pick up do all the 'creative work.

Havign said that, there are plenty of men in the same boat. I also think that 1) it's a produck of tabloid-driven cleeb-culture and 2) these people have made the choice to concentrate on looks rather than caharacter.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Thats my point, a lot of people here post complete rubbish, yet they fly under the rader when the insults are being dashed out?
Why is it that it seems to be just the girls who are singled out for their supposed stupidity, when they are behaving in a manner that is completely common place?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

cos they are more prolific posters of sh*te?

Surely this speaks more about the attitude of the peers?

I'm studying Maths, and more than half of my classmates are female, and more than half of them (OK, all of them) are attractive, some extremely so.

I don't draw any conclusions about them other than, "you lucky thing, beauty and brains." But maybe it's just me...

    ughh i have to disagree.

cant be f*cked to explain why, maybe i cant, but the simple fact is this is the internet. You cant smack someone for saying something stupid (which the thread you quoted from was in alot of ways) so elaborate put downs and flame wars are what we get instead.

Got any other evidence of people putting them down outside that one thread?

    What she said.

For the record, koneko is female. So if it is indeed a real affliction that people seem to suffer, then you'll have to agree that it's not gender-specific.

Intelligence is generally not perceived as being able to pass exams, carry out experiments or conduct surveys. It's generally considered a measure of one's ability to apply what they know, and to assimilate and apply new information as it comes along. Plenty of people who left school after their Junior Cert, I would consider extremely intelligent, and on the flipside, I know people with PhD's who know very little outside of their PhD subject. Just because someone has a qualification, doesn't make them intelligent in my eyes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

There's all forms of intellegence, I remember seeing some chap on The Late Late Show talking about intellegence, he was saying even though David Beckham is perceived as "dumb" that it requires masses of intellegence to kick or control a ball as he, and many other footballers who may not have been the A students, can do.

There are plenty of females on boards that are considered both Good looking and intelligent.

Theres no need to fight the power just because you dont agree with how others are being perceived on the internet.

instead of making a huge u****ortant discussion on it why not let them just change the minds of the people who are saying such things.

Anyone who needs to hold up a piece of paper to reinforce their intelligence to other people just illicits pity from me tbh. The same goes for people who name drop authors/books completely out of context and without reason. Or people who think that having an in-depth specialised knowledge of an obscure sub-field makes up for lack of knowledge in everything else.

In fact. In general. By definition. I only consider a minority of people to be intelligent. Most people, unsuprisingly, are just around average. :)

TBH I think Seamus's post is pretty much agreeing with what you have said in your first line.

I have met lots of intelligent people, who were not qualified to do anything. It does not follow that they were stupid, just un-educated from a certificate perspective.

But 'intelligent' people can act stupid, irrespective of their looks ;) .

As a side line, it never ceases to amaze me the amount of people on www.boards.ie who so obviously depend on the "googleinsms" of this world to support/prove their POV, they plagerise and then try and put forward this information as their own knowledge. That's the pathetic nature of BB's.

    1) imo (in my opinion)
    2) POV (from my Point Of View)
