    Hi all,

I am running for president for Institute of Blanchardstown. I have my nominations and manifestos submitted and a good team working to support me. I am trying to think of something memorable to do during the campaign.

We are thinking of getting someone famous to come in and wear a vote Dave for Prez
t-shirt, for a couple of hours around the canteen, that however could be costly.

Anyone got any good realistic ideas for something like this?

    Dave

students are easy and shallow creatures when it comes to things like this (i was one). Give away some free beer and chocolate are your sorted

i suppose just lie to them all. promise them everything that they want. always say yes. go with the popular feeling. then when you get into office become a bit ambiguous and try to achieve the stuff you realistically can.

people wont remember, and wont be suprised.

Find a way to tap into the bebo market (tell them you invented it or something)

when i was in blanch they handed out sweets and that got my vote. and one guy just shouted "vote for x" as i was walking into the hall so i did.

you're over thinking this. most people don't really care tbh

You do realise you have will very little real power to change anything and the majority of students will vote for the person who gives away the most lollypops.

    Just sayin is all..

Well here's an idea, maybe get an SU website? There's nothing on google and you're one of the only Students' Unions who don't have one.

I was never into student politics but some of the campaign antics of UCD back in the day included:

    - public debate with your opponents - where you can show your witty, superior self. Give out goodies at the end of the debate as your final hurrah.

    - get some random, funny band to compose songs in honour of yourself, slagging the other guy, camp it up, make it entertaining - saw this done twice, one band nailed it, was so funny, the other died a long, slow, painful death. Or use a guitar guy/poet/drama group/random entertainer to go liven up a lecture on your behalf. Just don't hire some painfully unfunny person.

    Saintly

In the UCDSU elections one of the blokes dressed as Batman (he was goin for entertainments officer). He didn't actually win, but most people remembered him at least.

I ran a couple of campaigns for friends back in UCG. A couple of things that always seemed to work there:

    * stand in strange places (like on top of a statue or whatever) and address the students around you

    * give out free tea and coffee near the voting area. One of the guys I helped get elected did a whole "have breakfast on Tony" thing where we gave out tea, coffee and toast and photoshopped Frosties boxes as posters's (he's greeeeaaaaaatttttt!!!! etc.)

    * get your manifesto out alongside your posters in places where students can stop to read it.

    * plaster the place with posters, get your mug out there. The more unusual a place you can get posters or banners up, the better (think windows of towers/second floor of the library etc.)

    * a quiet alliance with some of the other candidates running for other positions can help. trick is to keep it quiet, if someone asks the advice of one of your canvassers as to who they should vote for in another election, you recommend them and vice versa. Don't make it a ticket though, it has a habit of back-firing

    * lollypops and sweets work wonders. Try sticking lollypops to copies of your manifesto and you'll get more people reading it, and assuming it's good, they'll vote for you.

    * try and mobilise any clubs/socs you're a member of to throw their weight in behind you. Their involvement has won many a student campaign.

    Good luck!

In GMIT only 1 out of 9 students voted.

Not exactly a mandate for whoever got elected
