Help - Wi-Fi flatliner wits end

I have a lovely, old, compact, IBM ThinkPad X600 (233mhz - but then I'm pretty old myself). It is just ideal for a bit of WP, Quicken accounts, re-reading flash transferred articles, and - on a wired LAN - great surfing.
At Christmas I was given a Sitecom Cardbus Card (Wireless 140g + plus hi speed 2.4Ghz). I have recently tried to mate it with my Eircom supplied Netopia router and I have been sadly defeated.
My desktop is running Windows XP (+Service Pack). The Thinkpad is running Win2000. I have followed the lousy diagramatic instructions and tried to get info on the Net, but I am stumped. The green 'Link' and 'Activity' LEDs twinkle away merrily but there is no meaningful communication.
Can anyone please direct me to a site that will lead me through the set-up in real terms (as in - For Dummies!)
For the anticipated invective - Get Real(I'm a Silver Surfer!). For the helpful - Thanks ... Monthsful!

Is it using the latest service pack of win2k? Win2k also has pretty lousy wireless networking support, and usually relies on a manufacturers third party app to connect, which can be quite flakey.

Whats the error you're getting in Windows? Is it even seeing the network? Have you used a wireless network before yourself? (i.e. whats your experience).

Thanks AstroFool, for the reply. No experience with wifi. I have set up a wired LAN in the house (3 computers) but that it worked both mystified and pleased me.
I shall find the Service Pack for Win2K and try a re-install noting whatever pops up.

    Potchumkin,

Eircom usually supply the Netopia with WEP enabled. Make sure you have WEP enabled on your laptop wi-fi connection. You can get the WEP key from the Eircom supplied utility or straight from the Netopia's configuration page.

Unlike Astro, I've always had better luck with the configuration utility supplied with the card rather than anything built into windows.

    Zab.
