Hey since I hear there's an rpg out there to rival morrowind, does anyone know where I might get a copy of Gothic II. I have tried play.com and amazon.co.uk, play don't even sell it and amazon only have copies that people previously owned.

The Gothic 3 collectors edition contains the first two and is out on May 5th.

Now that's what I call a special edition, are these games any good?

I know a lot of people praise them very highly but they are fan boys so I dare not trust them

I was gonna post a topic on Gothic 3 to see what the minimum requirements are. I've played the gothic 1 demo and I found the combat to be somewhat laboured and you have to be very fast getting things out of your inventory when in the middle of a fight as there is no pause.

But it definitely sparked my interest as I've always heard it being mentioned as a rival to the elder scrolls series.

The German version isn't due for release until September this year so they're along way off finalising system requirements. "Guesstimate" system requirements are floating around out there but they're worth about as much as the next man's guess. However the developers have stated that an nVidia 7x00 or ATI X1x00-series card is required to run max details (pixel shader 3.0 support I assume).

Gothic I & II were very CPU and RAM intensive rather than GPU limited. Considering that the engine will load huge chunks of map into memory it's probably not going to handle well, if at all, with any less than 1 gig. of RAM. However Gothic will most likely scale down much better on low/medium graphics cards than Oblivion has.

It's a very good game. Not without it's flaws and bugs though.

It does have a few issues: but once your turn the settings down as little and disable harware sound that solves a lot of it.

It offers much of what people raved about in morrow wind oblivion.

    (1) people that talk

    (2) Basic AI: people don't like when you pull a weapon on em, people get up and go to work, animals/critters will give you a very clear warning to you before they attack i.e. wolves will growl at you etc: this gives you time to run away if you are low level.

    (3) Very similar in combat to oblivion's: strenght effects hand to hand in that you do more damage and can use bigger and heavier weapons as your strenght goes up.

After that it's up to how well you dance :-)

No shields though: but you can block. 2 types of weapons 1 handed and 2 handed.

1 handed: you can attack and block quicker but have less range.

2 handed: your attacks are slower but more powerful but you have a bit more range that the one handers: a great advantage for killing big tough creatures that you dont want to get close to.

(4)Day/night cycle with the odd bit of rain.

(5)Huge playing world: the game is split up into levels: which are HUGE. Very well designed maps. Exploring is rewarded.

Biggest difference is that creatures are as tough at the start of the game as they are at the end.

There are no classes as such: but you join one of 3 guilds at the start mercenary, paladin or mage.

You can level up in any skill: but it's harder for some guild members than others. Ie: hard for a mercenary to raise mana/ hard for a mage to raise strength and combat skills.

You will spend a lot of the game running away from enemies.

Just because you see it at the start of the game does not mean you can kill it.

If it looks big and nasty it is and will tear you a new one until you get to the higher levels.

Combat can be very guerilla: you will hit and run a lot and use a bow/magic to wear them down before you mix it up close with a sword. Especially on the tougher creatures.

Leveling up really makes a difference though:you really kill stuff that used to kick your ass a lot quicker as you go up the levels.

The skills system is different. Every level you go up you get 10 character points that you can spend on either putting up your attributes or skills.

However to spend the points you need to find the relevant trainer for that attribute or skill.

Also there is no "quick travel" it's all on foot.

All in all well worth a try. It will suck you in if you click with it.

Lost many an hour to the game: first gaming stint was 12 hours.

1 and 2 are things only being done now in Oblivion. Certainly seemed to have been ahead of the pack. I plan to grab a copy of this myself. The amazon.co.uk stuff does include new copies only from resellers but they should be reliable if their rating is good enough. Alternatively amazon.com has the gold edition which includes the add-on.
