Isn't it the Irish "mar dheadh" or however you spell it? Pronounced "Mar Ya"? There are plenty of Irish speakers on this board who should shed light on what that means...

Mar dheadh = as if, supposed to be, letting on

    Scarcasm as gaeilge

    Same here.

    Thanks.

    Thanks A LOT.

Maria, by the way, is a name of Egyptian origin, a form of Mary, meaning "The perfect one".

Actually, I would have thought it was more likely to be Máire (M-A-fada-I-R-E - pronounced Moi-reh) - which is also the Irish for Mary.

    She doesn't know your name
And your heart beats like a subway train
Ooh it makes you wanna die

Ooh, don't you wanna take her?
Wanna make her on your own?

This has to be one of the most confusing threads ever - thank you minesajack for the translation.

However the mind only boggles at what they must be not be teaching youngsters these days. Mar Dheadh is one of the quintesssntial Irish phrases dripping with pointed yet affectionate sarcasm. I think a literal translation would be "so they say" but this lacks the subtlety and gentle sarcasm of mar dheadh.

ie: "Wayne Rooney, the greatest footballer ever mar dheadh" would suggest that the speaker doesn't agree with the statement and pehaps finds it a little bit amusing that people think so. Perhaps a purely english alternative would be: "Wayne Rooney, the so called greatest footballer ever".
