I'm not sure if this has been discussed, or whether it's too techie for this end of boards.... :p

Can one hook up an AM transmitter to an iPod to get to play toons over the original AM radio in a vintage car?

I'd like to do this if possible as it would be the least intrusive way of enjoying the original radio.

    :)

I would guess not. A thing for sending a signal from an mp3 player is available for modern sterios but their illegal in Ireland, a cassette type of thing is used here. I very much doubt if your baby will have a cassette:D I prefare to listen to the V8 purring, it's so much better than the crap on the radio.

Modulating to an AM signal isn't that difficult, but not worth it, the sound is crud (or maybe authentic ;) ). There are a number of companies int the US who sell radios to retrofit into your car that are Stereo with cd changers, but all behind the original facade. Have you seen mine in the Mustang? Looks original, but not.

A better option however is a hidden radio, they have a radio remote so you'll never see them (under seat, in boot, whatever) and will take aux inputs for iPods etc.

I really wouldn't bother with the original radio, it will have drift and will pick up all sorts of odd interference (have you listened to an AM radio recently).

    I'll dig up my links later...my .02 c

This crowd would do it but at $399 it's bloody steep!

This is much more practical I guess if it's a Mustang.....$189 isn't too bad I think?

Or this lot who supply customer fascia'd Kenwoods for most big American classics:

These look great, I was gonna put a remote control stero under the seat and a couple of well positioned speakers.

There us a guy on ebay.de that sells old blaupunkt (spelling) etcs for Mercs Porsche etc, maybe he could help you out. look under oldtimer.

Now that sounds a better option if it can be hidden....

(I wouldn't want a false FM radio behind the facade for my own tastes).

However, if I could indeed 'modulate' the AM I think that could be cool as i'd get a kick out of it being AM - seeing those radio tubes light up and glow gently at night!

    Supersonomatic rules...!
