Booked a week for me and my girlfriend in Chicago in December (early) I've made a reservation at the Inn of Chicago (Best Western) hotel which seems the best value for money centrally located hitel but we can cancel at anytime for no fee, so if anyone knows anywhere better tostay, please tell...

Also looking for genral tips re Chicago. What do do? Where to Shop? Wher to eat? etc

ha ha. Yeah the Best western is probably the best hotel for centre location and sure you won't be spending all your time in the room.

Best places for shopping are Michigan Avenue and State Street. Malls and outlet stores are located a good bit out of the city but if you are renting a car it would be worth your while checking some out if you want to do alot of shopping. Otherwise you'd have to get trains and buses which would be a pain.

Well you definately have to go iceskating in Millennium Park. Its located off Michigan Ave and has skyscrapers surrounding it on one side. It's free to skate, but you gotta pay $7 or $8 for skate rental and you can stay on as long as you want, apart from when they clean it.

They have some good museums in Chicago, although I never went to any when I lived there :o . That Science and History Museum seems like a good place to go. It has Sue, that T-Rex which is meant to be impressive.

There's stuff like going up either the Sears tower or John Hancock building.

Can't think! When you live there you forget about things..ya just take them for granted.

Check out metromix.com as it has everything about entertainment in Chicago from Restaurants to Movies to Bars and Clubs and they give reviews aswell.

There was a thread posted a while back and a guy called Kincade gave some good information.

    here it is http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054876292&highlight=chicago

I lived in chi for a while. Kickin' city! I fully agree with what larianne said. What part did you live in BTW? I was by UIC campus 8 blocks S IIRC for my first stay, and in "Boytown", near wrigley stadium for the second.

The museum of science and industry is fantastic. When I was there they had a space capsule that had a section cut out of it you could see all the wiring and stuff. Way cool. Be forwarned its a full day to see everything though. I didnt even get to see it all when I was there.

The shed aquarium is good too. Of course you have to go to Michegan Avenue, drop into FAO Swartz if it is still around as well as the rather cool looking Apple store. The Donald E converntion centre might have an interesting show running too.

Naturally you have to visit the blues bars, navy pier, little italy, lincon Park zoo, and chinatown. Theres a cool reggae club up on the north, not sure exactly where it is, but ill ask the wife.

Food wise - there is a huge selection you will want to sample genuine chicago pizza, there is a great Pizza place by the water tower not far from the John Hancock building. Visit Greektown (Near UIC College Campus) for some fantastic Greek cuisine. Chinatown is self-explanatory. There is a great japaese restaurant that was my local on the northside. Fantastic food and stupily cheap. Its over by Briar if you are looking for it. Try to fit in a couple of small (AKA sh1tty looking) mexican places too, the food the animal. Einstein bagels are good. I can honestly say that in all my time in chicago (about 5 months total) I never had a bad meal.

If you are interested, ill get you proper addresses for these places

Oh, yes, you will be wanting to visit the outlet malls for top quality shopping at stupid prices. Anytime we go to the US we bring at least one empty suitcase. Natuarlly everything we buy is declared at customs :) For this you will need a car. Dollar do the best rates for younger drivers, enterprise and hertz are decent too if you are over 25.

Dont be afraid to just jump on the "El" and explore the city.

I lived in Boystown!! Just off Broadway! Near the IHOP. Great place to live, safe area.

It's gonna be December so Navy Pier be quite cold. Well anywhere will be quite cold!! So bring plenty of warm clothes-Hats,gloves,scarfs. Don't let the weather put you off though, I loved going around when it was all snowy.

The link I posted above has a good bit of info on Chicago. I absolutely love that city. If I could I'd live there, but I don't fancy doin it illegal again. :D
