Camera Advice

I am thinking of getting myself a digital SLR, specifically the Pentax *ist DS.
Does anyone have this camera or could you offer some advice.

I already have a Pentax MZ50, which gets very little use as of late as I keep forgetting to get the film developed. I tend to use my little Olympus digital compact more as I can just post the pics directly to the web or print any I want to. So would the DS be a good choice for a first DSLR?

EDIT: Also I am thinking of buying it from cam-ireland.com. Has anyone used them before? They are selling it for €659, and then shipping is €15.

Have not used the Pentax, but had Nikon D70 with 18-70 lens, which I was very happy with (until stolen recently).

Nikon D50 / D70S or Canon 350D are all very good it seems, but 350D too small and fiddly to handle in my opinion (I was considering buying it), but it may suit you. The Pentax is also small, but many consider it better than the 350D in terms of ergonomics.

Have a look at dpreview.com forums too see what people think. I remember Practical Photography magazine (a good few months ago) rated both the D70 (as it was at the time) and the 350D above the Pentax, but all seemed pretty good.

Sorry can't be of more help, but dpreview.com gives lots of opinions. However, you may be more confused than ever after reading the forums as there is so much information, and users tend to stick up for the camera they bought. Bear in mind that the reviews on websites e.g. stevesdigicams.com tend to be carried out when camera is new and therefore rave about a camera that is now seen as past it, the Pentax is now out a long time (I think). Websites don't tend to re-rate cameras in the light of newer models.
