That new channel ESPN showed it yesterday. Liverpool v Bruges (who had beaten Juve in the semis) at Wembley.

I was astounded by the quality of the play. I thought it would look slow and cumbersome compared to the present day, but I was very wrong. 1-0 didnt do Liverpool any justice as they dominated, but the Bruges keeper was inspired.

Souness and McDermott were nothing short of brilliant in midfield and Thompson was excellent at centre half. Dalglish took his goal really well, and Fairclough did very well upfront, despite being kicked around the place by the Bruges backs. The biggest differences from today were defenders getting away with more, back passes, and a far more strict offside rule.

I'll repeat again that Souness was class that day! Won every tackle, and sprayed passes around like you wouldnt believe. Never gave the ball away, and always looked to be positive.

I would like to watch all those old games again, but having the time to do so is the main limitation!

Its true that many of the old matches are of fantastic quality. For example, France in 1984, and there are many qualities that players exhibited back then which you dont see today in the average player.

The elimination of the back pass was a good change, as teams had exploited it more and more over the years and it eventually became ridiculous.

Souness was indeed a great player. Like many players though, he hasnt been able to convert that into management skills!
